A/C Is Cooling better w/steps I've recently taken.

Post by 71Ford »

I spent $800 last year in parts/labor to get my a/c working....I bought a new compressor, evaporator, and hose.....I tried r134 conversion and was not happy.....then I tried r13 and was not happy and went back to r134 and the only frost was inside the vents...but by the time it made it 5 inches from vents, it was no longer cold air....I have since taken out the vent by the drivers side left lower vent and the passenger side right lower and covered them with Walmart plastic shopping bags and then re-installed them to seal off all outside air. I then bypass the heater core hose from March-November, BUT BY FAR THE BEST 2 THINGS I'VE DONE ARE: WINDOW TINT AND INSULATION ON THE FIREWALL AND UNDERNEATH THE CAB. A BIG differrence. I've always been reluctant to change the "all original" appearance of my truck, but forget it! I'd rather be cool than "cool"......anyway I took my truck to the window tint place and had the darkest limo tint installed....they said by law 35% was as dark as they could do it......then I went to Walmart Automotive section and bought Window CLING Film 5% and applied that over my newly tinted windows AND MAN IT'S DARK DARK DARK AND I'M SURE VERY ILLEGAL....but I don't think the cops will ever know. I then went to Lowes Home Improvement to the insulation Isle and there rolls of this bubble wrap stuff but it is covered w/aluminum and is used for insulation purposes it says..like to go over a/c ducts...anyway it states it deflects heat up to 170 degrees......I covered my firewall and every inch under the cab....so basically from just below the windshield wipers down and under the cab between the engine, trans, exhaust, pipes, etc....anywhere I thought there was heat, I put the insulating bubble wrap....I bought Aluminum Tape to tape it all in place....anyway befor
e I did all that my floor boards had noticeable heat and now nothing......it has been 100 degrees here all week and I'm FINALLY COMFORTABLE...except for my vynile seat.....but I sit on a towel for now until I can afford to have it recovered in cloth.... :2cents:

i am a state inspector in dallas and only vehicles 1988 and newer the window tint is checked. the older vehicles it dont matter. this is to pass state inspection. now that dont mean a cop wont mess with you. but that is what is state law on tint as far i was taught in state school.

If you ever have occasion to take your system apart, replace the condensor with a larger unit. That will help a lot in cooling as well.

When was the tint laws passed in your state. If questioned you installed it prior to that date and you should be grandfathered claused to comply with the laws at the time you claim it was installed.

I don't have an a/c but was getting excessive heat in the floor. Found out the screws holding the rubber boot around the floorshifter had worked loose letting the heat in there. Amazing how much tightening those screws helped.
