Radio Removal 69 f100
Does anyone know how to get the radio out of a 1969 f100? It is the original AM radio. I was wanting to put a CD player in. I read in the Chilton book that you are supposed to remove it through the instrument panel. That seems almost impossible and I don't feel like taking it apart.

It would be a lot easier to remove the glovebox insert and then pull the radio out through there.

Yeah, I pulled my out through the glove box and it is a lot eaiser.
Remove the glove box door, remove the emergency flasher (it unplugs from the switch in the back), remove the screws holding the glove box in place and pull it out.
Take the two nuts off of the raido volume and tuning knobs, remove the nut on the back of radio (support strap), remove the antenna lead and pull out through the glove box.
If it gets too tight you might have to loosen the defroster tubing from the vent but it just slides on and off.
Oh yeah, when you pull out the radio, you can remove the two screws on the top of the chrome cover and remove it. It will give you more room to move around inside the dash.

You can install a CD player into your truck's slanted dash by using a Metra DIN radio installation kit #99-9222 for a '75-'93 Volvo. Flip the mounting piece upside down and attach it to the bent-back ears in your dash, which will allow the stereo to sit perfectly horizontal in the dash opening.

I've heard you can get them at Best Buy at the back where they do the car installations.
But that's just what I've heard from this forum.. About $15.00 or try ebay.

I bought my cd player from Fry's in Dallas.
I bought an install kit with it.
I had a second chrome radio cover which was pretty trashed in the front. I cut it so the mount would fit. The mount is simply a rectangle and has tangs to bend out when it is mounted in.
I slipped it in, bent the tangs, bent the radio knob supports back, slipped the whole unit in through the front, installed the screws, put the back support strap on and reinstalled the glove box.
Be careful when you bend back the radio knob supports. the metal is thin and it will flex your dash. It also has a tendency to break off.
If you decide to cut the radio supports instead of bend them back out of the way, you better be sure you never want to go back to a factory radio. the metal is very thin and would probably be hell to weld back in place. :twisted:

How hard is it to take off the bad nut on the radio? Do I have to move the defost hoses and stuff like that out of the way.
PS: I wonder if I could be a jerk and just take it to best buy to install the radio. I think it is like $50.00 :twisted:

Which nut is bad?
If it is the one on the control (tuning/volumn) it might be very hard to get out.
If it is the one on the support strap, you can probably cut the strap. You should have a new one in the box with the cd player.
If it is the one holding the support strap to the firewall, just ignore it and attached the new strap in another location.
You will need to play some of this by ear as some trucks are different than others due to modifications made over the years.
Also if you take it to get installed, they will charge to customize the dash for it to fit. You might want to double check the price and reconsider which is best for you.
Don't be afraid to try as the Ark was built by amatures and the Titanic was built by pros.

Don't throw away the original radio! I, for one, would like to find an original radio for my '71. AM or AM-FM, it doesn't mater. There is a radio that was installed by the previous owner, but it is the duel knob type so I think the dash is unharmed. I haven't checked yet though.

Atleast now I know now to pull the g/b liner out and that will make things a lot easier. Mine has already been replaced with a tape deck, but really want a cd player. Thought about one of those headliners with the built in speakers and radio slot.
1969 Ford F-100. 302 4 barrel, C4 auto, 9in 3.50 open rear, headers, power steering, Turq/wht, Under restoration. In other words, in a million pieces!!!

Everybody NEEDS to realize AND remember that it is NOT necessary to cut up the dash to install a DIN-style CD player. It'll fit just fine by bending back the ears used to mount the stock radio. Bending those ears back instead of cutting them off will allow you (or a future owner) to re-install a factory radio.
