Another metal dash question

My old truck, a 70, did not have a good paint job under the pad. Several thin spots and one large place with no paint, just primer. I think mine was the exception, most people seem to have a full coat of paint on theirs.

Finally got the dash pad off tonight. I've been having truck time withdrawls!

The dash is in really nice shape. Just a couple scratches on the drivers side, looks like they got there putting the dashpad in! I took some pics but I have an oldfashioned camera so I'll take them in tomorrow and hopefully post them tomorrow night.

LazyJ70 I'll take some pics of the emblems for you too. Mine aren't in great shape but you'll get the idea. If anyone knows where I could order any new ones I'd like to replace a couple of them. Also, I think my truck was probably rebadged. The radio plate says Ford as does the horn button and I have lighting bolt hub caps. I really have no idea what the actual Mercury logo was or if there still was one a that point.

Took my pad off yesterday, looks like it had a good coat of paint but maybe got some sand on it before it dried. The wife says she can clean it up like new. Probably gonna give her first shot at fixing it. She already thinks it looks better. The 67 I got rid of had a great paint job on the dash.

I smoothed mine out this weekend. Pretty simple job. I cut some pieces of 24 guage sheetmetal and used some two part putty epoxy to affix it to the underside of the dash. A little filler and some primer later and it looks like this...



It took about 2 hours total and cost me $5 for the epoxy since I already had the sheetmetal, filler and primer.

Yet one more thing I'm gonna do to mine while she is under resto. Looks a lot better. Too bad I have no reason to pull my perfectly good dash pad off except I want something different.

okay, this might be a dumb question but what else have i got to do at work Has anyone thought about putting some of that liner stuff on the metal dash instead of getting a new dash or pad? or am i just in a weird mood today?

I'm seriousy thinking of leaving it flat black. I hate the reflection of a shiny dash in the windshield.

Don't know about a rhino lined dash but what we do when we paint a metal dash is color sand it and buff it but not back so shiny. It gives it a kinda satin look that still matches the rest of the painted pieces. Just not as shiny to blind you in teh sun.

I can think of another good reason - to sell it and get a few bucks back. If it's nice and its black I'd be interested.

If you find one that is not black you can paint it with Duplicolor's paint for vinal. I used it on my door panels and the look like new from the factory.

Here's some pics of my new metal dash. Good to know about the Duplicolour paint. My dashpad was perfectly good too but I'd rather have a black one or no pad. The paint's in really nice shape, just a couple scratches I can touch up. I'll drive it as is for now. My husband does CNC machining on the side, he says he can cut some vent covers for me out of aluminum. I'll get pics of that as soon as I can get him on it.
