found something interesting

Today as i was sitting in traffic (aka bored) i was looking at my instrument panel and noticed that there was gray "paint" over the "chrome" i thought it was the opposite way around but when i reached down i peeled some of the gray off and it exposed more chrome. Does anyone know what the gray is. The gray cover everywhere that i think should be chrome and it just peels off.
Any ideas?

its probably the plastic coating on the plastic dash insert that is flaking off. most turn yellow and flake off.
