Truck update w/pics NO 56K

Post by boots »

Latley ive been busy with alot of firewood splitting, but I had to get my truck done fast so I could haul loads to customers. I finished my shackle flip, and dropped the front hanger down, to gain 4" of lift which let me get rid of my crappy blocks. I got new u-bolts and plates from the junk yard. I welded 1/4" plate to the back of the stock front spring hangers, then welded another plate to the front of that so I can bolt it to the frame( still need to drill the 4 holes and bolt them in). I then welded up a crossmember that goes over the driveshaft to make the whole rear setup very strong.

All new spring bushings installed, along with hardware. I got the engine tuned up, it runs great but I really want a Edelbrock manifold, and 4brl carb. Next month sometime Im getting new 36" ground hawgs, then taking my trucks 9" spider gear to my welding class, im going to weld it all up with the mig to lock my rear axle.

the truck looks great! good job!
I hope mine turns out that nice!

A couple questions:
Its my understanding that with a shackle flip, the strength of the shackle is way reduced (compression loading vs. static loading or something :hmm: ) are you going to haul a lot of firewood (tonnage-wise) with the truck?

with a large (heavy) load of firewood on the box, and running 36" tires, aren't you going to have a problem keeping axleshafts intact with a welded spider? thats a huge amount of stress on a 9" axle and the bearing keeper things.

Even with all that being good, I don't envy you having to load and unload a cord of firewood out of that high truck!

The shackle flip is fine with one load of firewood in my truck, but overall having the shackle stock is better. I dont think that the locked 9" with 36's on the street will be a problem, even with a load of firewood... I may break and axle shaft off road though. If it is a problem though, I will get a 1 ton rear and leafs with a shackle flip.
