Installing a stereo

Post by RandyBee1 »

What do you guys do when you install a new stereo? My original radio is a shaft mounted one, all the new cd players are not. I'm guessing that I have to make or buy a bracket to hold the new stereo in place. Any ideas?
Thanks.. Randy B

there is a kit for a volvo that works i think. but you have to bend your ears back in the radio hole.

You can install a CD player into your truck's slanted dash by using a Metra DIN radio installation kit #99-9222 for a '75-'93 Volvo. Flip the mounting piece upside down and attach it to the bent-back ears in your dash, which will allow the stereo to sit perfectly horizontal in the dash opening.

Some may cringe at the Idea, but I loped my ears off with the die cutter. Then used the cage as a template to cut out my trim piece. (you'll have to cut into the top corners just a little). Mount the cage into the trim piece , secure it by folding the tabs back, re-install the trim piece, slide In the stereo and you're ready to rock! Looks very nice as long as you take your time. :D

...what do you do with a '67 with an already butchered dash? The deck I have (a rather nice Panasonic) is a secondary, so I don't have the collar or any of the other install crap.

there are way to do it red maybe put a piece of plywood behind the dash with the cut out for the stereo knobs and opening or whatever your stereo requires and then use a second piece on the outside as a sandwich type of thing if you see what i'm saying. you could paint or stain it afterwords or before could work too. or maybe even rig on some heater duct tape the aluminumn metal type. for a chrome type finish. or get a piece from another truck and weld it in so you could have something to hook to.

I'm VERY interested in this procedure, but am confused- it's not unusual. I hate to beg for pics- but maybe....?

Are you using the stock radio mounting bezel and modifying that? I could care less about a factory look, but I do want a quality installation. I've done it already with the metra kit and it's OK, but would be interested in alternatives...

thanks.

the stock chrome bezel in my 72 already has been cut to fit a din/mini din radio and the tabs are bent back. Too bad that cab will soon be replaced.
