door panels

Post by fordman »

on the 70 and up inner door panels they have the padded door panel with the wood grain. how does that come off of the inner steel panel? is it glued. are there clips what? ive never messed with any of those. i don't want to break these. i can use them on my truck.

If it is the same as the 69's they are held on by clips, but I could be mistaken on the 70 and later.

Thier held on with clips.
Remove the window crank handle, the arm rest, and the inner door handle. Then remove all of the screws holding the steel door panel to the door.
From the backside of the steel door panel use a pair of needle-nose pliers to release the clips holding the woodgrain door panel to the steel door panel.
If you pry on the panel from the outside you will tear out the cardboard backing of the panel where the clips are.

Hope this helps

are there two styles involved here? my 72 had no panel to unscrew but did have the clips that could be removed with a simple prying just behind the panel at the same spot as the cliip.

I guess, yes. There are two styles involved here. Im speaking specificaly of the 70 model door panels. They have a steel door panel as well as the cardboard backed door panels in the center.
I think the 69 and 70 were this way. But the 72 donor truck I had only had the cardboard backed door panels attatched directly to the doors. ( I destroyed them trying to figure out how to release the clips.)
Plus, when I used one of the 72 doors and installed the 70 door panels to it, I had to drill out a few holes for the difference in door panels.

I think I just found a couple of pix to illustrate what Im talking about.

72 door panel:

Image

The 72 door panel is all hardboard and covered with material. The clips snap directly into the door.

70 door panel:

Image

The 70 door panel uses a steel door panel attached to the door with screws and has a smaller meterial covered hardboard panel attached to the steel one. (Notice the aluminum trim ring on the outside edge of the steel door panel to cover the screws)

My '69 is a Ranger model and it has the steel door panel set up.
The '68 just had the cardbard panels, though.

:hmm: Sounds like the 70 on down to 67 have better places to mount either 6x9 or 6" speakers.

Ok thanks guys sounds like something to research when i get my next truck or two.

go to your local parts store or harbor freight and buy a door panel remover. this what you need. I know it says for plastic clips but it will work just as good on the metal clips. I used them for years in the shop.

I also learned the hard way that the door panels will not interchange between those two styles. When I re-did my 72, the doors were rotten so I put on a clean set off of a 69. I was thrilled to find the proper 72 full vinyl sport custom panels for mine, paid the $100 bucks off ebay and got them. Went to mount them on the 69 doors only to find the holes are totally different! This should be fun!
