How can you tell drivers vs passenger springs?

Post by calvinstoy »

I had a salvage yard pull some springs for me and they did not mark them like I asked. One spring is slightly taller than the other, is this the drivers side spring, or, should they be the same length?

I discovered the same thing when I was installing my front end. I couldn't remember which was which. Figured I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right, so I figured that with the extra weight of the driver, steering column, box, etc. on the left side, that must be the side that needed the bigger spring. Got it all put back together, bolted the wheels on and dropped it to the ground. That's when I noticed that the left side now sat higher than the right. :cuss:

Ended up having to pull everything back apart to switch them around, and now it sets level. Of course, mine is only to the rolling chassis stage right now, so I can't say for absolute certainty since it doesn't yet have the weight of the engine/tranny/etc...but I believe the slightly-taller spring goes on the right.

The taller spring does go on the passenger side ,in most rural areas where you have a two lane" which side is lower and takes the most beating?"

Hey guys...it just dawned on me today, while I was at the shop taking pictures, why the heavier spring needs to go on the passenger side. And that's because....the engine and transmission are offset to the passenger side by several inches. They're not dead center like you'd think they'd be. I mean, I knew the engine was offset, but it didn't occur to me until today that the offset would put more weight on the right side, thus needing a stiffer spring. :D

So how much difference is there in the springs anyway.I compared mine side by side and there did not seem to be a difference.I have my springs installed and there is about 1/8 inch difference between sides,is that correct?Jerry

calvinstoy probably has a fresher memory than I do, since it's been months since I installed mine, but if memory serves me correct, there was about 1/2"-3/4" difference between the two, before being installed.
