Juliano's Shoulder Harness

Post by jwetzel1492 »

Hi Everyone,
I just bought one of the 3-point shoulder harness kits from Juliano's and I spent some time fiddling with it last night. It looks like I might need to do some custom mounting fabrication, because when I tried to bolt the retractor and L-bracket into the stock mounting point, it would only fit if it were angled forward, which is going to make it chafe a lot.

Has anyone else installed these? Do you have any pictures of your setup?

Thanks,
Joel

I ended up having to make my own mounting bracket. Their bracket is just a simple L-piece, and when bolted to the floor at the stock location, it puts the retractor too far back. The retractor butts up against the fuel tank, angles forward, and binds up the belt.

What I ended up doing was fabricate a bracket about twice as wide as Juliano's, with the mounting hole for the retractor as low as possible (to fit the retractor under a metal bar that is part of the seat). I actually had to file down a little bit of the retractor flange to make it work.

Other things... Well, the special mounting bolt they send for mounting the piece that's up over your shoulder? Wrong diameter and threadsize for a bumpside. So I had to fabricate a replacement for that too.

So, the long and short of it is, I got it in, it works great now and looks good, but you can save yourself some money and order it without mounting hardware, because you won't use any of the stuff they supply. You'll have to make your own.

Thanks, Joel!

Can you tell us what bolt you ended up with for the shoulder attachment? Did you just find a Grade 8 bolt, or did you have to change the bracket inside the cab's corner?

Any chance of a couple pics of the bracket you made?

Thanks very much for keeping us informed...

I used a grade 8 bolt that fit in the stock upper mounting point. Also a grade 8 washer, and I had to make a stainless steel spacer for on the bolt.

I'll try to take some pictures of the bracket and post them tomorrow.

Thanks,
Joel

PS - Who knew when I first pulled out my leaky PS pump, that it was going to turn into a near frame-off restoration? I just ordered a bunch of suspension and steering parts from LMC. Woo hoo! More toys!

I got some pictures taken.

Here's one of the floor brackets I made. This one is for the passenger side. It uses the stock mountpoint, but shifts the retractor further forward and lower than the bracket Juliano's sends.

Here's the whole setup viewed from outside. The retractor had to be low to fit under the metal arm on the benchseat. It is also just slightly tilted rearwards to line up with the direction the belt needs to go. You can see how close a fit it was with the seat in front and above, and the tank and fuel lines behind. I actually had to file off about 1/32" from the bottom of the flange on the retractor to make it work.

Here's the upper mounting bolt Juliano's sent. It's too big to fit my stock upper mount point, so I made a replacement. The spacer portion is about 1/2" long.

And finally, here's the upper part after installation:

And in case anyone is interested, I've been writing about all the work on my truck on my blog. There are two relevant posts so far, and more to come.

Those help a lot, thanks for taking the time.

I once owned a house in Girabaldi, OR. Had a chance to drive through there a year ago. Beautiful country...
