Homemade headliner

Post by mjhaltom »

Has anyone made their own headliner out there? I want a black headliner, but I am not willing to pay what LMC wants plus the shipping charge. I have the old damaged one to use as a template. What would ya'll suggest I use to cut out a new headliner?

masonite would be a good flexible material or even flooring underlayment would be flexable enough.

Don't waste your money on a lmc headliner. You go to home depot or arts and craft store and buy a sheet of paper board. It's no thicker then a quarter inch and use your old one as a templete to trace then just buy fabric glue and buy a roll of what ever fabric you like and smooth all the rinkles out and let it dry for an hour. You shouldn't spend more then 30-40 dollars.....good luck

We did ours with 1\8" Masonite and covered it with 1\4 foam padding and then put the fabric on that ,it went well but if i were to do it again i would bend the ends a longer time and use water or steam !

I made mine from headliner board from a local upholstery shop along with a can of contact cement to glue my headliner foam/fabric to it, they had a ton of colors to choose from. I used my old liners as templates and they have been up for about 3 yrs with no problems. I think the total price for the 2 of mine for the crew was 50 bucks.

I made mine from a donor van's headliner. The van I used is a 96 Dodge Caravan. Its tough but flexible enough to bend into shape and it had 2 dome lights in it. It a thick multilayered cardboard and trims easy with a razor blade. I have some pics if interested.

I'm thinking of doing a nice headliner board and puttin in some padding and crushed velevet diamond tuck. and also putting in an overhead console.

I wondered about that...I want to redo mine in matching seat vinyl, but I didn't know if I should pre-bend the corners so it fits nicely into the surrounding metal strip,or if tightening the screws on the metal strip would be enough to get the headliner to match the contour of the roof...

Hi joe, i did not bend it before i installed the liner , but what i did do is make some clips to hold my liner up so i could work the corners in . If you look at my up dates we did the seat black with a dove gray insert ! the liner is the same gray , i made kick panels also . The 1\8 board was ease to form and work with ! I would think if you wet the ends and laid it on a horse and let the ends hang over and weigh them down it would bend and stay after it dry ! But , by not bending and pushing into place you do not have to secure the center and it is very ridged and there is no need for center support . It really turned out nice a couple of people picked up on it with out me mentioning the liner a all !The clips i made were in the shape of and " S " one side clipped on the truck steel where the head liner goes then i lifted the liner up in place into the clips and then worked the back into place! if you need more info let me know i will see if i can get some pictures and send them .

Could the old peg board style be used as a backing board?

And could it also be screwed in to make a speaker mounting point down by the gas tank?
