Starter won't disengage and ignition switch won't kill truck

Post by Banjo »

Well, continuing in my saga of trying to install this duraspark system into my previously hacked 68 truck, it'll crank and run now, but starter won't disengage and ignition key won't turn truck off, I have to get out and pull the negative cable to kill the truck. Any thoughts? I appreciate you (in advance) for your time to both read and respond. Banjo.

something is definetly mesed up. because you should be able to remove the battery and the engine should stay running.

I've been told low voltage will keep the starter engaged. Is your battery dead?

speaking of low voltage. the truck can run without a battery provided the alt is working properly.

Sounds like your starter solenoid is stuck. I had the same problem. The solenoid is stuck in the start posistion. The solenoid will constantly run the starter and also provide your ignition coil with power ~via~ the "I" terminal designed to bypass the resistance wire (and the ignition switch) when starting.

The solenoid will also cause the engine to continue running when the ignition switch is in the off posistion. Disconnect the "I" terminal on the solenoid and the engine will stop.

Usually these problems are caused by water entering the solenoid and causing corrosion and rust.
