Stuck glovebox

Post by jwetzel1492 »

Hey All,
I've got a glovebox with a stuck door. When I got the truck, it would open, but was tricky. Had to simultaneously push the button and pull on a corner of the door. Then one day, "push pull push pull". Darnit. Wouldn't open anymore.

Is there any way of getting in there or removing the glovebox without destroying either the dashpad or the glovebox door?

Thanks,
Joel

for stuck glove boxes like that i take and hold the door stil and then take my fist and smack the knobwith the pinky side of my fist so as to actuate the button once its open use some graphite pb blaster or wd 40 to stop it from sticking again.

Yeah, that hasn't worked. The button is REALLY hard to push. All I end up with is a sore fist. Has anyone had any luck with a bent coathanger or anything? Are there any drawings of the latch around?

Thanks,
Joel

Mine usually sticks when the weather turns damp. What I do is push and hold in the button while at the same time pushing in on the door. This seems to give a little more travel to get the latch into the release mode. Then, while still pushing and holding the button in, pull the door open.

or maybe you could try some pbblaster or something around the knob and just inside the door aimed at the latch.

I'd try to spray some penetrating oil into and around the latch. If that doesn't work, you might have to get in from underneath and take it loose. you would ruin the fiber box, but LMC has them for about $15. That's better than bending up the glove box door with a prybar and hammer!

Thanks for all the ideas. If I have to get in from underneath, will I have problems with my factory AC unit? Is that hard to pull out?

Thanks,

it is a pain and you will lose the freon out of it when you pull it if you take the hoses off. surely you can get the box open without having to do all of that lets hope.

Push the button in. Now whack it good and hard with your fist.
It will come open.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

Once you get the box open, I would take the latch off the door and take it apart. Clean off all the old lube and junk and coat all the moving parts with a light coat of grease. You should have any problems with it for a long time afer that.

The PO of my 72 mounted a small half oval cabinet door handle just above the latch, as mine sticks sometimes. You can hook a finger through the handle while pushing the button and it opens right up. When I first got the truck I was going to remove it, but it turns out its pretty handy.

I had this problem aswell. I ended up reaching around from the backside, over the cardoboard glove box, and pressing down on the latch.

I took it out and soaked it in rust penetrant and lubed it with wd40.

I did find that pushing on the door while pressing the button, helps quite a bit. The latch is rounded toward the front and flat on the back where it catches on the dash panel. When you push forward on the latch, it helps to press in the pin the holds it in. I think it was designed this way to help prevent accidental opening when barely pressing the button.

Pulling on the door helped in no way. I think it just caused the latch to hold tighter.

do not keep hitting it or pushing it in, because most likely you are pushing the latching piece in as well, making it tighter.
push the button and use a plastic wedge so the pressure is on the inside pushing out.after you get it open, adjust the latchhook outward some.if its too loose then you can move it back a little at a time but dont go back too far or you will be stuck again.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.
