BLANK interior code means...?

Post by edselehr »

I'm looking at an 1970 F350 crew cab. It is in Wimbledon White and has a styleside box (165" wheelbase). This is how the second line of the VIN looks:

165 M F350 8 G 27

Looks like this truck has no interior code. It is wearing a Ranger-type burled walnut dash and door panels, and has the Ranger type seats. Is this Ford's way of putting a Ranger interior in a crew cab?

Kinda sounds like it. It's been my experience that whenever the trim code or paint code is missing on the VIN tag, it's because it's a special-order truck with something other than what was normally available.

The Ranger package was not available on the crewcabs, but you could special-order Ranger-type instrument clusters and door panels, but not a Ranger emblem on the glovebox door or exterior belt-line trim. I have seen one crewcab truck with the exterior trim, but I'm pretty sure it was added by the owner.

Ah... are the rear seats in a Crew Cab wearing the same seat covers as the front bench seats? If so, then all the Ranger interior upgrades are simply bolt-ons (or stitch-ons) from the standard cab Only the rear doors would be missing any Ranger trim then.

I can see why the beltline stainless would not be available on the crew cab, because pieces for the "B" pillar and rear door would need to be fabricated. But it sure would look nice, and would allow for some nice two-toning.

Another question: are there any armrests for the rear doors? I've seen a couple and they are missing...or did they never have them to begin with?

The only rear armrests I've seen have been owner-added. There isn't room back there for mounting the fronts...you'd have to use something shorter, like the '67 pieces.

Thanks for those pictures - very nice looking interior! The bright trim around the door panels and (what looks like) cloth inserts in the seats seem to indicate this was a high-end Crew interior. Or are these also after-the-fact additions?

I don't know what '67 armrests look like. I have a '60 Comet and '59 Ford that has the "generic" tapered foam armrests. Is that what you are talking about? I could see those maybe fitting...but wouldn't you have to fabricate a plate to screw them into? Or is the inner door skin behind the trim panel sturdy enough?

Okay - thanks! But the more I look at the crew rear door panel, the more I wonder where to mount any kind of armrest? Probably why they didn't come with them originally. Anyway, thanks for all the great replies. Food for thought.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

My '70 F-250 4x4 custom cab chassis came from Ford painted pacific power green. It has no interior or trim codes.
