Deitz Clearance Lights

Post by 71PA_Highboy »

OK... I was sitting in the truck in the snow yesterday, and I was playing with the instrument light dimmer (OK... First time was an accident, I was reaching for the wipers).

As I dimmed the lights, I notice the clearance lights on the roof of the cab dimmed....

Now, everything I have seen/read says the clearance lights are supposed to be powered via a relay in the passengers side door post...

Did somone mis-wire my lights or is there another explanation?

TIA,

Eric

I think you need to investigate the wiring and let us know what you find. Sound like in the past life of your truck someone wire the clearance lights to the dimmer. As far as I know, the hazard lights and other exterior sides should not be affected by dimming the interior lights.

After further consideration, you may want to replace the light switch. The clearance lights should stay bright when the dash lights are dimmed. May be something amiss in the switch.

i would take a wild guess that the relay is no good and a previous owner wired them up to the instrument terminal on the headlight switch or one of the unused blue wires under the dash that shows power when the lights are on.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Actually, the 1968 F250 wiring diagram shows the cab clearance lights fed directly from the headlight switch on wire 285.?? What was installed in each truck, well. . . And the Camper Specials may be been different. Then the dealer may have added the lights. The F350 and larger truck wiring diagrams show a relay. The condition described seems to indicate the rheostat is feeding the clearance lights. That might be possible if the headlight switch has been internally damaged.

OK...

The switch CANNOT cause this issue however wiring can.

The question was (or should have been): are the clearance lights supposed to be relay fed, regardless of how they are currently wired?

I know I don't ask questions well, so for those that have answered, thanks for your input.

Anyone know for sure since wiring diagrams for 71 aren't available on the site?

My truck is a 71, F250, 4x4 Base model, 360, 4 speed.

Thanks all!

Eric

Uhh... that diagram specifically calls out a Relay and a Circuit breaker...

I am confused.
