Did I Do Good?...Steering Column Qs...

Post by Mooosman »

Alright, so I'm going to be swapping in an automatic tranny when I swap engines this summer, so today I went to the junkyard to get an automatic column and shift linkage. There were no bumpsides with auto columns in the yard, but plenty of dentsides to be found, so I got what I could.

What I found was a 74 F-100 with manual steering and an automatic. The shifter/shift tube felt nice and tight when I worked the linkage (not sloppy going into Park, like most of the dentsides I've seen), so I grabbed this column.

Did I do OK? My truck is manual steering, as was this donor truck. I just want to make sure this column is going to work in my truck before I take it apart to rebuild and paint it? My truck is a 72 F-100, currently 3 on the tree.

Now, I have some questions:
-Are the rebuild parts for this column going to be the same as those for a bumpside column? Just by looking at it, it looks exactly like a bumpside column (except for the hazard switch).

-Anyone know a source for the detent layout panel (the clear plastic part with the shift pattern printed on it), and a new pointer for it?

-Also, a new grommet for the shifter? (where the selector goes into the column)

Thanks guys

Nick

P.S. Anyone know how to convert the wiring in this thing to bump spec?

red/black stripes to brake light switch
green/white stripes to LH front turn signal
white/orange stripes to emergency flasher
yellow/brown stripe (I could only find yellow/black stripe to LH rear turn signal)
white/blue stripe to RH front turn signal
blue to turn signal flasher
blue/red stripe to "PRNDL" lights
green to RH rear turn signal
yellow/blue to horn relay

73-77 Fseries column wired to 1972 Fseries.

White / Blue to Front Right Turn Signal & Indicator Light
Green / White to Front Left Turn Signal & Indicator Light
Black / Red to Stop light switch
Yellow/Black to Rear Left Turn Signal Light & Brake Light
Light Green to Rear Right Turn Signal Light& Brake Light
Blue to Turn Signal Flasher
White/red stripe is for the Hazard lights
Blue/Red stripe - Gear selector courtesy Light
Lg.Yellow/green dots --Horn this one was also the same color between the two colums.

*Note. Wiring code changes if cruise control is used.

now on my 77 colum with built in cruise control the wire from the column for the right rear brake/turn was dark green. other wise everything else matches.
