Brake lights gone
My brake lights have suddenly quit working. I bought a new switch, and that didn't help. My turn signals, and tailights work, so it's not the bulbs. With a test light, I'm not getting any power to the brake light switch. What can cause this? Also, all of my fuses are good.
thanks!!!
thanks!!!

are you having no power at the switch or at the socket in back? could be your brake switch even a new one could be bad when new.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

re: Brake lights gone
if you replace the fuse and it blows again you may have a switch problem or like i once did, wires running up the column to the switch somehow got the insulation rubbed off.drove me near nuts till i found it.i think the switch was replaced by a p.o. and not done correctly, once i fixed with a new switch no more problems.
most electrical accessory problems are caused by corrosion in the plug- ins or the wires themselves or grounding issues.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

re: Brake lights gone
since this is related, i'm posting here in hopes of getting a solution for blue68 and me. i just replaced my turn signal switch today and i'm not getting any blinking signals in my cluster or signal lights, no brake lights, but i am getting the running lights on.
there is power to the brake switch. the brake light fuse has strong power on one end, but weaker power from one of the clips/terminals.
kid, from what you said about the fuse above, could the weaker connection from the fuse box be causing the turn signals to go out and cause no brake lights at all?
could it be a bad turn signal, maybe return this one and get a new one?

Clean the contacts where the fuse goes in the holder. Yes that could be a real problem. The brake light fuse feeds the circuit that lights the turn and the brake elements in the bulbs.
When you apply the brake the power goes through the switch and through the turn signal switch. When the turn signal is on the turn signal gets power and it feeds the element. If the brakes and the turn signal are on at the same time the brake power is broken by the flasher only for the side that is flashing. The switch allows uninterrupted power to go out the other side.
Rarely do out of the box parts fail, unless they did not fix the problem. I never had one bad out of box that I can remember

re: Brake lights gone
ok, all great info that i'm going to refer to later when i'm in the truck again. i think i might have realized one issue and that's my incorrect terminology. today i replaced the turn signal CAM, not the switch. the old cam had a crack in it.
it's quite possible that the turn signal SWITCH itself has now failed, right? it'd be about $55 at the parts store and wouldn't get here for a few days. i'll try cleaning out fuse terminal more, but would you recommend replacing the turn signal switch?
thanks

If the power is the same on both sides of the fuse and when it is the same on both sides of the switch then look at the turn signal. If the bulb is getting voltage then the reading after each part will be what remains after the bulbs or a short uses it.
Fuse in 12V
Fuse out 11.5 dirty connection
brake switch in 11.5
Brake switch out OV press the brake.
Brake out 5V then the switch or something after it is eating the power.
Those readings are from my 72 F250 the hazard flasher is killing 6.5 volts no matter what position it is in.
