Seat springs?

Post by Supermike »

Quick question about my seat (my truck seat, that is... :D )

My truck appears to have the original bench seat in it. It has been reupholstered similar to original styling, and is in good condition, appearance-wise. The problem... it's like a trampoline! When I sit on it, I sink like 4 inches, and it's springy as all get-out.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do about this? I would prefer not to have to replace it, but I also don't want to look like I'm mounted on a pogo-stick when driving. Is there something I should check to see if it's missing, or can an upholstery place "sturdy it up"?

Just looking for suggestions...

i would think you could strip a newer seat and take the springs out and use them in yours.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Shouldn't there be wires or cables that connect all the springes inside the seat. That should prevent the bouncing and sinking by distributing your weight across most of the seat.

Possibly... I'll have to pull it and see what's going on under there. I know some of the supply houses sell rebuild kits for the seats, so maybe that's all I need. I might also just consult a good upholstery place here locally and see what they come up with.

Just tryin to get my ducks in a row right now and prioritize, so it'll be a while. But it helps to know what I'm looking at before I start.

Thanks!

Good question. I noticed that some piece of seat wire has let go and now hypdermic needles me when I sit. On mine I think it's just 40 year old foam and weak springs.

My 67 & 63 seats are the same way. I am going to try to merge the 2 into one. I hope it will clear the T-5 stick :o

Maybe it was just the design? I think I'll take mine to the upholstery place once I get to that point and see if they can add some springs or bushings or something to firm it up a bit.

the springs can get weak and worn out in any seat. when those cross wires get broke and it feels like needles you do need to do something with the springs in the seat. maybe even replace the seat. i'm not sure the cross wires are replaceable.

It might be easier to find a seat in good shape at a salvage yard and reupholster it. Probably alot less work than repairing bad springs. :2cents:
