When going to power steering...

Just searching out my options to make my truck more "driver friendly", I am looking at the hydroboost option..

I need the actual unit, the power steering unit, and the master cylinder...is there any chance of hiding the master cylinder (as it doesnt use a booster)?? Also, can you not mount the actual hydroboost unit down on the framerail somewhere out of the way, to clean up the engine bay?

Well, yeah, I suppose you could, but then you'd have three very long PS lines going down to wherever you mounted it. Plus obviously you'd have to custom-fabricate all the brackets, brake-pedal linkage, etc.

I think I typed that up wrong haha. I meant to say gaining power breaks. Not power steering. But that raises another question...

In the write up about the bronco, the guy (dont know who it actually was who wrote that) said he grabbed the saginow box as well, so do you need power steering to do power brakes? Also, Keith, is running a different setup from something like an Astro, or the wagon in that writeup much different than buying the kits being sold that you mount on the frame, to clean up the engine bay?

You don't need power steering to do vacuum-assist power brakes, since the booster gets it's power from engine vacuum. A Hydroboost setup is hydraulic, and gets it's power from the power steering pump. And in such a setup, the Saginaw PS pump is vastly superior to the Thompson 'pencil-neck' pump, though it can be made to work.

The Hydroboost unit simply replaces the vacuum-assist booster, so the master cylinder is still attached to it.

I was just told that some of the older BMW 5 series use a hydroboost setup that the clutch master cylinder mounts inside the firewall. I don't think making the gas pedal and all work would be too big of a problem. I may need to wait until the truck is inoperable again though haha.

The F--600 I have has the booster down on the framerail under the rear of the cab. I wonder if that might work for you, at least the bracketry, maybe?

Sounds to me like you're talking about the clutch slave cylinder, not a Hydroboost. I'm not even remotely acquainted with BMW's though, so take it FWIW. I've never heard of a remote-mount Hydroboost setup.

You're talking about the vacuum booster, right? Actually, according to the shop manual, your F600 should have TWO vacuum boosters mounted under the cab.

I just checked my truck, and it only has one large booster under the cab (Well where the cab used to be! ).

AFAIK, the truck is a '68 but it's registered as a '69, I know that could be a DMV error, tho.
