you can use the round ones.
the big trucks and buses also used the square ones, and my 77 bus has one too.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Someone PLEASE tell me exactly where this $%*& blinker is located!! Is it what makes the "clinking" noise when the signal is on? If so, I get brief periods where it "clinks" once, so I can hear it.. but I'll be darned if I could find the thing!

I tried pulling my instrument panel, but could only get it about 3/4 inch away from the dash w/out unhooking the entire think, which I'm not sure I'm ready to do...

Thanks, fordman... How exactly is it hooked to the cluster? Screws? Nuts? Will I need to remove the whole cluster to remove the flasher?

i think originally it was held on by some sort of plastic strapping to the cluster. it may have been riveted to gther at the ends to hold it tight enough that it could be slipped in and out of the strapping. i think.

It is held on in a circular spring clip

all i can say is that it looks like it will fit. i did get both flashers for you in the box. i was wrong about them being different. they are both the same #552 12 volt. i think they both work but i didn't test them. here they are thermal flashers. http://www.tricoproducts.com/brochure.c ... ion_id=124

Thanks fordman!! I'll wait for yours and see if they work before I open this one up... I didn't know the 552 flashers would work. This puppy was $8.99, which is a lot of $$ for a flasher!

533??

The "EL-12" I picked up is a two-pronger, as is the 552. Where's the 533 come in?

I had it all pulled out, so I went ahead and used the flasher unit I bought. I guess I couldn't resist seeing if it actually worked or not.

The flasher I bought does work fine. What I found was interesting, though. There was only ONE flasher unit on the back of the panel. It was on the far right side of the panel. It was a "baby blue" or light turqouise color, and had a "nub" on the end of it. This "nub" snapped into a hole in the instrument panel just like it was meant to be. So whether it was original or not, I can't say, but it sure looked that way.

On the bright side, the flasher until I plugged in is supposed to be "long lasting", so hopefully I won't have to do this again any time soon. It does not have a "nub" to plug into the panel, but there was a round bracket thingy mounted under the dash that it snapped right into like it was meant to be. So at least it's not just hanging back there. I'm not sure what the bracket was for.

One final note, this instrument panel was a real pain in the @ss to get out and back in, but at least my blinkers work now!

Well, my flashers work now, too... I got my "new" ER flasher switch from fordman today and put it in tonight. When I flicked the switch on and off, I got nothing. Thought I must have had a bad wire or something. I was a bit disappointed, but figured I'd fix it later. At least I had a switch in one piece.

The weirdest thing happened, though... I decided to leave the switch installed and mess with it more later. Only, I accidentally left it in the "on" position. Then, as I was getting out of the truck, I accidentally hit the blinker switch and... emergency flashers!!

So as long as I have the ER flasher switch turned to "ON", AND have my blinkers turned on (left or right, doesn't matter), I get flashers.

Very bizzare. I could only find ONE flasher unit under the dash, and that was the one attached to the instrument panel. So my new flasher unit is also working with the ER flashers. My turn signals work fine, otherwise. No apparent problems. I turn off the ER flashers, and I'm back to normal blinkers.

So I'm not sure that's right, but it'll work if I need 'em... but does anyone have any ideas, or could it really have been set up that way?
