Stater

Post by wildcard »

Quick question. I have a 7 volt short apparently in the stater or the volt. reg. Which I've had checked twice. It goes between the batt wire and the volt reg. Would it be wise to cut it and what does it actually do?

I replaced it Sunday but it still shows a short. Maybe I can get the reg checked tomorrow. Thanks.

I will tell you tomorrow. I will put my meter on both my trucks. They both have the 65A alternator and the 250 has a electronic reg while the 350 has a mechanical one. I will read both and get back to you.

By the way what year and engine do you have?

It's a 71 Custom.
The engine is a 300. The engine is brand new. Only been in the truck 2 weeks. All electrical components are new as well, as are a few of the wires. The short goes away when the plug is pulled from the voltage regulator.
Thank s for your help.

OK, I seem to have that problem solved. Had the reg. checked at an alt. shop and they said it was bad. Got it replaced and stopped that short. It's doing around 13.8 to 14 at the batt. now. And 13.5 with the lights on. Does that sound about right or too high?

That is right and that is at an idle. My electronic mirrors your readings and my mechanical is 12.5 at an idle.

i am glad you got it fixed, the questions lead to the proper diagnosis and repair and do not bother me. better to ask than fight it on your own.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.
