steering wheel

Post by alvinator »

Well, i went with an aftermarket steering wheel for the truck and I still have the old one and was wondering if it was worth trying to sell or not. it has the horn ring but has the usually cracks around the 3 spindles.

if the ring is in good shape, it is probably worth more than the wheel. :2cents: of course, you could use that wheel to practice repairing the cracks. if you get it all figured out and get good at it you could make extra $$$ on the side repairing old steering wheels.

Yup. Save those wheels if the cracking is not rediculous.

We repair steering wheels all the time. Not too hard to repair them and repaint them.

Got any examples of your work (before/after shots)? How much do you charge to restore one?

both eastwood and por15 make wheel restoration kits. some guys have used
kitty hair to fill in the cracks after grinding angles on the cracks for the fill material to fit in.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Yessir, BigD... I was talkin' to you. :)

You said "We repair steering wheels all the time.", so I assumed you must have a shop or something where you were doing this for people.

I'd love to see some before/after steering wheel restorations.

Yeah my Dad has a restoration shop. I will try and get some pics of steering wheels before/after and get them posted with a price of what it would cost.

Good deal... if they look good and all, I could easily seem him getting some business from here. Especially if the price is right as compared to the cost for a reproduction wheel.

We have done probably 10 or 20 in the last couple of years for the guy my Dad works for and a few other cars we have done. But due to matching paint we wouldn't be able to paint them. We would just fix them and prime them and leave it up to the owner to paint them. I would say it would probably cost around a $75-$100 to do a steering wheel plus shipping. That would include fixing and priming being ready to wipe down and ready to paint.

What if you didn't want to match paint, but just wanted gloss black?

If you took a little time and found some paint similiar to the metallic-like finish they had on these originally, you could charge like $25-30 more. Of course, I'm sure there would need to be some clearcoat kind of finish over it.

That wouldn't be that big of a deal to do it black, but if someone wanted it to match the interior color that is what I was talking about. If I had a sample of the color I could get it matched and then paint them. I'm not sure what color they was originally, but I'm sure I could do it. SO if anyone is interested let me know. I will try to get some before/after pics sometime this weekend or week and get them posted.

I'm interested, possibly, eventually... largely will depend on how much a reproduction steering wheel costs compared to the restore, and whether I'll be able to use them once I get PS installed. I'm still trying to figure that all out.

Nothing I'll be doing soon, but I'm sure there will be folks here who are interested.
