Float Doesn't Float

Post by poleman »

I replaced the in-Cab sending unit float with one from LMC. The rubber boot that was on the original brass float (the one with the hole in it) was mush so I tossed it.
The new float is not boyant enough to float in the gas when it is attached to the arm of the sending unit. I cleaned all the rust & crud off of the arm and took apart the sending unit and cleaned the guts up hoping that would help, but it still sinks.
Any suggestions?

Take off the rubber boot.... Worked for me. I had the same exact problem a year ago and there hasn't been an issue yet. :D

The rubber boot is gone. It was basically a piece of tar when I pulled the sending unit. I just have the bare brass barrel on now and it won't float.

Well, that's strange.... :hmm: Are you sure there are no holes in the float, allowing gas to enter it and weigh it down? Does the new float feel any heavier than the old one? Maybe some manufacturing flaw that allowed some foreign material to remain inside the float....if you shake it, can you hear anything rattling/moving around inside it?

The new float floats in the tank with just a loose piece of wire attached to it. The arm moves freely up and down and the gauge works when I lift it up & down by hand. It does seem a little heavier than the old float, but I still can't see why it won't lift the arm. I guess I'll go to the parts house and see if they have another one I can try.

take both floats to the post office and ask them to weigh each one and see if there is a difference in thier weight. make sure the old one is clean and dry.

I had the same problem with a float from LMC. They are TRASH! Mine hardly floats in gas by itself, let alone with the sending unit arm. I'm stuck watching my odometer untill I can find a good old float or a new one that will float.

I ordered this on e-bay. Its the right part # and is from what looks like Ford dealer.

I will report back if it works or not.

The Ford part works. It was MUCH lighter than the LMC part.

The ebay link isn't working anymore. (at least not for me)

Does anyone have a website / phone number where someone can order one?

How much is the Ford part # COAZ.9202.B?

Thank you.
