Mounting a Unity spotlight
Just got my hands on a cool vintage Unity spotlight (with the Ford logo on it) with the correct mounting bracket for a bumpside truck. (Thanks Robert! ) I figure it'll look pretty cool (and period-correct) on the choptop.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any vintage Unity spotlight mounting instructions in their collections? The main thing I'm wondering is what size of hole needs to be drilled, and how the angle of the hole is figured out. I could probably just wing it and use the mounting bracket as a rough template for the hole angle, but I've only got once chance to get it right, and I'd kinda like to. I spent a few minutes searching through Unity's website, and found that I could get a mounting template (free of charge), but I really don't want to buy a mounting kit (that I don't need) just to get a copy of the installation instructions. I sent them an e-mail asking for a copy of the template and asked if they could also just e-mail a copy of the installation instructions, so I'll just wait and see what I get back.

Man...just ran across their installation tools page....the 22" long 1/2" drill-bit for installing this is $122! Of course, it DOES have a replaceable tip...but heck, I'm only gonna use it once!

Hmm I do recall seeing those instructions, I thought it was you that had 'em, maybe it was me? Will do some digging. If nothing comes up, I can point to approximately where the hole is in the dash. Have seen those mounted on a few bumpsides, both sides.

Maybe 69CSF250 could answer some questions for you. His new truck has the utility lights. I think they're pretty sweet, by the way. Wouldn't mind haveing one myself.

Here's a photo I took when I removed one from a truck a few years ago. I though I had some measurements too. I'll look around.
(Couldn't find anything other than this and one other photo.)

You can make up the 22" bit. I just braze a piece of round bar stock
on the end. Or you could arc it on too. Works good. Nice spot.

I bought one of those from the junk yard, not sure if it's got the Ford logo or not, I'll have to check. I haven't even begun to think about putting it in yet, I'm with you, I'd like to get it right since it's kind of a one shot thing. Hopefully they'll cough up those instructions for you.
You should be able to get a reduced shank 1/2 bit and put an extension on it for a pretty reasonable price.

Just checked, no Ford logo, and it looks like it mounts in the bottom of the windshield pillar. It is a Unity though.

re: Mounting a Unity spotlight
Hey Keith, is there any type of part number on the mounting bracket that is correct for bumpsides? I see the model # S6 on the light itself but assume that has nothing to do with the proper mounting bracket for our trucks. I would love to have one myself and want to know exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks.

re: Mounting a Unity spotlight
Just an update to this thread....I ran across an E-bay auction where someone was selling some old instruction manuals, one of which was the installation sheet for the Unity spotlights. I went ahead and bought it, really hoping for more than I got, but upon receiving it found that it's more of a generic installation guide. However, I went ahead and scanned it for future reference...click these to enlarge:
It did confirm my suspicion that a drill bushing would be needed to drill the hole, something that would've been included with the mounting bracket kit....which I obviously don't have, and I don't really want to buy the complete kit just to get the drill bushing, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Sorry about that, I guess I missed your post the first time around.71 LONG BED wrote:Hey Keith, is there any type of part number on the mounting bracket that is correct for bumpsides? The bracket on mine is numbered 185L...the 'L' being for the Left side. I would imagine the mounting bracket for the right side would have the same number but with an 'R' instead.
