Battery Ground Question.

Post by xMAJORx »

What's the best place to ground the battery? The chassis or the engine? And where at exactly?

Alternator bracket is the usual spot.

Bad choice... but common.

There is a threaded boss on the block just below the alt.. that is where it is SUPPOSED to go.

Gets the cable under the alt and out of the way, and eliminates running the starter current thru the water pump bolts...

The battery should always be grounded to the block, not the chassis. (Rubber motor mounts don't conduct current very well.) ;) You should also have a smaller engine ground strap which runs from the back of the block to the firewall.

2ga min. to the block, from the battery. Usually a threaded hole somewhere on the front portion of the motor to make this connection. Install a large ground strap at the rear of the motor (bellhousing bolt close to the starter) to the frame. Ground straps to the firewall, from the engine as well.

I noticed that the battery ground strap on my truck IS attached to the block.

I got a ground strap. And thanks for the pic, I'm a visual learner.
