Reverse lights not shutting off

Post by theogre5150 »

My reverse lights do not turn off for some reason except for when I shut the truck off. The only thing I have done is replace the flasher for the turn signal. Do I have a short somewhere?

Hey Eric

Check the switch on the brake pedal bracket...
I't may have gotten stuck or shifted just enough that it doesn't break contact when the pedal returns. I've had that happen before...

take care,

I think you should check your reverse switch.

Oops ... my bad, I mis-read the question...

yep... probably won't fix the backup lights by checkin' the brake switch...
Sorry about that... I had a problem with my brake lights staying on and they would drain my battery dead.

Hope ya figure it out.

My reverse switch was stuck. Cleaned it up the contacts with some electronic cleaner but am having a horrible time trying to reinstall it. NXD 5150, I will post a pic of where it's located.

for an auto the switch is on the bottom of the column inside the cab near the firewall. if it a manual it could be in two places on the column inside the engine compartment near the firewall or on the trans if its a np435.

What is the best stuff to use to lubricate the push button? It seems to be having a tough time trying to pop out.

Hey theogre...

If it is hanging up while out of the rig... I'd just replace the switch.
Why go thru all the hassle of putting back in a problematic switch?
It will give you problems again soon if you just try to lube it.

my thoughts on problem solving...
Do it right or do it again...
I learned that from a very hard headed Irishman

Ended up cleaning off the contacts with electronic cleaner and I greased the button with some white lithium grease. After I pushed it in a couple of times it started to work. Thanks for all of the replies on this.

Those reverse switches are quite a problem, The most common solution I have seen on these old trucks is just to mount a toggle switch under the dash or in the case of my truck, where the broken emergency brake light was. Kinda redneck, but I mean, it is an old truck. Besides, if it was good enough for my dad, its good enough for me.
