I'm planning to put mine back under the dash... one of those dual-voice or dual-cone ones that give you stereo sound. Thought about *mabye* running a base under the seat.

I like my tunes as much as anyone, but my truck is loud enough that if I blare the stereo TOO loud, I won't be able to hear what's around me, and that's dangerous. I don't need to compete with all the punks in the rice burners. Once I ref my engine, they can't hear their stereo anyhow. :D

I'm putting mine in the header above the back window on either side of the dome light. I had mine there in my "72 long since gone no pics (This truck was about 17 yrs ago). I used 4"x 8" speakers back then. This was back before I knew anything about bass or kicker boxes. With the speakers up behind you there is nothing obstructing the speakers , the sound is projected out and over into the cab. The hollowness of the cab pillars allows sound to travel down and out at the sides of the seats.
The tuner was a craig power play and I used a power booster(didn't even know what a amp or preamp was) used a couple of fully encased sony marine/ motorcycle type 4x6 or 4x8 speakers. This was in '91-'92 did the stereo on a real budget. I had a buddy of mine ,everytime he got in my truck he looked under and behind the seats looking for more speaker . I would just smile and point to the 2 above our heads and reply"that is all". he always called :bs: ( he had an '80 something crew with well over $500 in quote "sound system" and mine sounded way better)
I may never be able to duplicate the sound from the '72 but I have amassed some" system stuff" and am gonna try . I'll try to get a list of the componets and some pics. i'm not real close to this step at the present but I may deviate from my plans to prove my point.
With a little planning our truck's acoustics are excellent and for a few bucks , a good tuner a preamp and a couple of good speakers I guarantee you can at least drowned out the ricers with way more bucks in their "Systems".
I've posted on this subject several times , I realize some are against cutting tin but it make more sense up there and if done with care can have a factory look . they are up out of the way and don't get near as much abuse as in the doors(not exposed to the weather element) or kick panels.
Sorry didn't mean to ramble but I have experienced it and until somebody (besides me )tries it or hears one outfitted this way I guess I am just ramblin.

Hey Import...

I am making a custom box to fit behind my seat to replace the gas tank. The bottom half will have two 12's. The top half is going to be a lockable storage area.
I have a pair of old school 300 watt Hi-Tech cubes that mount on the front bottom part of the door. They have bracket mounts so there are only two small screw holes in the door (not the panel). They just clear the floor and are tilted up at a slight angle to maximize sound output.
I am going to put some good quality mini-dome tweets in each front corner of the head liner... The main speaker amp is going where the stock speaker was. I used to have a 300 watt Hi-Tech EQ /amp mounted under the dash... that worked really well and sounded great, but I haven't seen those for a while now.
The 500 watt amp for the subs will be mounted right on the box itself an will have it's own power feed with an inline switch.
I put basically the same system in my '95 Caravan and it rocks !!!
I found an old school tape player that will fit in the stock benzel...
The head unit has a 1/8 inch stereo input jack so I can plug an mp3 player or portable cd player right in with out having to adapt.
I love my cds, but you can't play tapes through a cd player, but you can play cds through a tape player. I have a alot of teaching tapes that I like to listen to when I'm on the road.
I put a stock duel cd/tape head unit in my Carvan, so it plays either in 8.1 surround sound.. now that's what i'm talkin' about... it will never win any sound competition, but it sounds so good I don't even care...

Take care and be blessed,
KaptnKAOS

Hey theogre...

They have something similar to that on e-bay now that's designed for our bump trucks.
Anything that help keep the sheet metal intact is a big plus IMO.

Take care,

I am going to have to do something different with mine. I've got some custom door panels and I don't want to interfere with them.

I know that I am going to buy one of those highliners with the speakers built in. I also may cut out a hole for a speaker on the bottom back portion of my door to allow for a speaker.

Didn't mean to hijack the tread Import. But, that does bring up something. Have you looked into the highliners? If not, go here and take a look.

you know i looked at that headliner, but i thought, those speakers are 4 inches, and can handle 10 watts, they're tweeters. I've got a couple pairs of 6.5's. I planned on putting them under the seat. but i figured, 4 speakers under the seat and no where else maybe would be over kill. but at the same time, the resonance of the metal may make the sound full. i dunno though. what do you guys think?
I kind of want something in the door so I was thinking about that dyson mounter. but i want to see more pictures of it, it looks like it may be cheesy. I thought about mounting a couple under the dash on either end, at the same time i didn''t want to drill holes in the metal. So i figured the sound would be muffled with no holes. I dunno. just thoughts.
have any of you guys used, the sound deadner? either the sheets or the roll for under the carpet?

I have not used it myself but I have heard positive things about the sound deadeners. The acoustics in our trucks are terrible considering the echo effect. When I start to work on my sound system I am definately purchasing the sound deadeners. It is also supposed to take out some of the wind noise which is a positive.

sound deadeners are a god send, IF you layer them up. one layer will do absolutely nothing for you. you start seeing/hearing the affects at 2 and 3 layers. it's not a magical remedy to vibration and road noise, but it does help. not only does it add considerable weight, but the "asphalt" actually absorbs vibrations. Not 100%, but a good bit. And remember....sound is vibration.

Another thing is, once you get floor pans all covered and ready for carpet, a company called "Second Skin" has a liquid based sound deadener that you can either brush, or spray on. Works wonders. A bucket of that, and enough to cover 2 layers on the floor will be awesome. Same for doors/roof/back wall. It's a lot of money to sound deaden a car properly.

I was told by a friend of a friend, That he put in that spray can insulation into the doors and behind fuel tank to combat noise and cold. Sounds chessy

i've seen some lat 70's dodges with pioneer speakers they had screws holding them to the area of the cab above the seat.up on the ceiling.

kinda looked like boom box speakers but looked clean and sounded good.
