E-Brake light in cab won't go out

Post by ryans51 »

I've got a '68 with an annoying light in cab that I can't get to turn off. It is the small red light in the lower left corner of the instrument pannel, next to the light switch.

I assume that it is for the E-Brake since it says brake on it. My question is where is the switch for that light?

Thanks for the help
Ryan

Your assumption is incorrect... it is not for the emergency break. It is for balance between the front and rear brakes.

It's telling you something is off in the system, basically, from what I understand you have to bleed your system until the balance is right again..

I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, hopefully someone else can chime in with more.

I haven't had this problem myself, but yes, your brakes are not working properly and that is a warning light!!! The system needs to be "balanced" at the very least, but you really need to find out why it is off balanced.

You can do what I did, remove the bulb until you have a chance to balance the system.

The light in my truck was gone long before I bought it. I don't need it though,my brakes are definitely not balanced.

I copied this from one of Keith's posts on this issue.

Turn the ignition switch to the ACC or ON position. Loosen the pressure differential valve inlet tube nut of the unfailed system, or the side opposite the system that was bled last. Operate the brake pedal carefully and gradually until the pressure differential valve is returned to a centralized position and the brake warning light goes out. Tighten the tube nut.

Here's a couple of illustrations from the same thread, both Keith's.

So....in order to verify that my thingy is centered,I'd hafta install a bulb in that thingy on the dash?? Ah...skip it.

I just flushed the system today so the pedal definitely works better,as in,no bottoming out. I think it will be even better when I put new shoes on.
