Transfercase trouble

Alright, now that the highboy runs good and reliably it is time to address the less pressing problems, top of the list is the funny acting transfercase. After you get some heat in the driveline it starts popping out of 2 high, usually when swtiching from drive to coast. It never pops out of 4 high, and as I found out the other day if you have about 1500 to 2000 pounds of dirt in the back it won't pop out, but as soon as you empty the bed it goes back to it. I tried adjusting the linkage, but to no avail. It just dosn't feel like it has enough gear engaged when you move around the shifter. Might this be a rebuildable problem, or am I doomed to a long hard search for a new case?

Sounds like your poppet ball spring(s) are weak. What t-case you have?

I don't know, I know it is the divorced case, and the shifter works by pushing two rods into the case to different depths. I could post a pic if it would help.

Dana 24. The little springs are located on the top side under screws. The screw point torwards the two shift rails. Make sure you remember what all pieces came from what location.

I've had them pop out of gear when the mounts get bad. The very last highboys had a brace from the rear of the T-case up to the fram to keep it from flopping around. even with good mounts the T-case will move fore and aft an inch or so. I had one highboy that only popped out when I hit a certain cattle guard too fast.

I replaced mine with a 205 because a rebuild was just as expensive around 8-900 for all new parts bearings and seals. On mine the shift forks were worn out and let the gears move over just enough to pop into neutral outta 2wd about 4 times within a mile. Got a little irritating. If your replacing the mounts Prothane makes polyurethane mounts for the divorce mount 1/2 the price of fords crap rubber.

I pulled out the top screw for the spring and nothing came out, I even had a friend move the shifter around, to see if anything came out. I must need to have the case out to get the ball any spring out. Not enough time right now to take it out. The mounts could probly use changing, they look lke they have a little play in them, but the big bolts are rusted solid, so I have to drop the case using the small bolts and probly heat the big ones. Again no time right now. The front bearing is bad and most the seals leak, so I really need to look into a rebuild or finding another one.

Yea, sounds like you might want to rebuild or replace it. You can to the 205 switch, but you will run into a speedo cable issue. As far as I know there is know where to put the cable. Talk to 460 Crew on his swap.

If you end up going the replacment route I'd reccomend the np205 it is a direct replacment and just bolts in except for you have to change the u-joint on the stubby driveline to a larger one like on the other drivelines. Oh and you would have to take your speedo cable down to the shop to have the end changed. A couple little differences but the 205 you can buy tons of parts for easily and a spicer 24 is becoming more and more obsolete quickly and pricier.Also its easier to pull the t-case by the small bolts and a floor jack with a helper or a tranny jack their heavy suckers,then you can battle with the large nuts on the stud bolts to replace your mounts.

460 Crew, is your T-case devorced? Does it hang down like the 24 did? Send me a pic.

EDIT Oh yea I forgot you had the C6. Send me a pic anyway.

It hangs 18 3/4in from the cab floor to he bottom of the case. I measured behind the t-case. Let me know if you still need pics. I'm interested to know how far the 24 hangs but I think their pretty close.

I can clean ditches with mine. I will get measurments. How far below the frame is your T-case hanging? I will PM ya. I don't want to hi-jack this thread.

Didn't the 73-77 use a 205? I know it was a different model, I ran a borrowed one from a 74 in my 69 once and I remember it was not a Dana and had the different speedo cable thing but bolted in with no problems. If I was at that point and could afford it, I think the married T-case would get serious consideration.

Willow you right the 205 was on the later highboys then switched to the married in 78-79 lowboys. I stayed with the divorced 205 in place of the 24 because when you make repairs to the tranny or t-case it can be done indivindually also the angle from the t-case to the front pumpkin would be greatly increased along with a lift would be even greater and then there is the need for angle changes. I have 2 married 205's and decided against them for a few of my own reasons. The gain would be ground clearance clearly but I belive thats about it.
