Title with no truck?

Post by snooziums »

This is going to sound like a really off-the-wall question.

Is there any way to purchase a title without actually buying the vehicle? For example, buy the title from someone who has a truck that they are parting out or sending to the wrecking yard?

Thus, if someone wanted to build something from the ground up, they would be able to do so and still register it, since they bought a title for a like-truck?

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Wow, thanks for the answer. I am glad I checked here first.

That being said, does anyone have or know of anyone that is willing to sell a title plus vin plates for a 1967 F-series?

An open title with a vin plate is fairly valuable. I have one for sale here for $150 but Chris has it spoken for. It is for a 72 I parted out and chopped up for scrap. Although the legality of it may be questionable, you could always re stamp the frame numbers. If you watch ebay you can even buy the star stamp that many of the older vehicles preceeded the vin numbert stamping with.
A good friends dad always welded a big bolt over the frame number and bolted the battery ground strap to it, then would feign ignorance if ever checked.
Selling just a title can be illegal in some states and I have heard ebay will pull any auctions for titles. There are title services from a couple states (Alabama and I think New York) because titles for older vehicles are real easy to obtain in these states. I have heard that Texas won't accrpt titles from those states, but can't substantiate that fact.
Basically you give them the car via bill of sale and they obtain a title then sign it off to you. But you still don't have a vin tag. I think I heard that reproduction vin tags are available.

The place that does the reproduction door tags is Marti autoworks...go to the top of the page, click on the "links" icon, scroll down to "Other Related" and you'll see the Marti Autoworks icon...

As far as the title, can't you file for a lost title??? Might want to check with the DMV in your state. Also, there might be a tow truck place in your area that has that information about the lost title's too. Most of those places that are certified through the state tow impounds and abandoned vehicles. As a alternate means of financial stability...you fix them up, file for a lost title and sell them...pays for gas I reckon.

Anyway, in Louisiana that's the way it's done. So check that out.

I have a title and vin tag available for a 1970 F-100 that I stripped. Let me know if you need it!

1970? Hmm.....

I might be interested. How much? I live in WA state. However, just cerious, that is the first parts of the vin? Such as what engine?

I realize that I will never find a vin code that will match my engine, since even though it was planned, it was never released.

You seem set on putting the 200 in a full sized truck. I still think it will be woefully underpowered and will required such low gears that any hope of good fuel economy will be lost.

I recently bought a 69 F-100 that someone put a 250 six and a c-4 in, and it is an absolute mutt! Wouldn't recommend it.

The 200 in the F-series during that era was actually considered by Ford, although they never followed that plan through. They instead released the Mazda built Courier.

How was a 250 installed? Different motor mounts? Also, what did the 250 come from? The Bronco and car 200's were rather different.

There is probably a good reason that Ford decided not to install the 200. Not doubting your source for that info but I would be curious as where it was.
If you go back to the early days, they did use much smaller engines and 100 horse power was more than enough to get the job done but those engines also had immense rotating mass and the condition of the roads kept speeds down around 45 or so. The mosel A only has about 40 hp but the flywheel weighs about 100 pounds and 55 is screaming in one of those. They did the job just fine but I wouldn't put one in my crewcab.

I wouldn't do that either. Really nice for a 64 mustang or a falcon...but not a truck.

Now, the 240 ci 6 cylinder/ 300ci 6 cylinder will do the trick. I personally have never heard of a 200 being put into our trucks, for any reason, but then again, I ain't heard of alot of things.

My 2 cents says go with the 300ci 6 cylinder. Very nice and good power.

Take some time and call the WSP to find out what will be required to license the truck her in WA. I know I bought a truck in CA when I was in the Corps and I licensed it in WA since I was moving in another month. Anyways we had to go to the CHP and have an inspection on the truck then have that notarised and sent off to WA before they would license it.

The WSP inspection will likeley include verifying that ALL vin's match, meaning the door tag as well as the two on the frame. The only way around this is to get a title for a vehichle that is already licensed in WA.

Here is another problem, the wrecking yards will not accept any vehichle without the title so unless it is chopped into little pieces and destroyed a truck will be destroyed with the title.
