Cracked Float on Aux Tank Sending Unit

Post by Daffy_'69 »

I have discovered the reason my Aux tank gauge has never worked.... the float is cracked and full of fuel.

I should say that the gauge did have a reading, once or twice, but it was always right on empty.

Question - Can these floats be repaired, sealed? If not, can you source just the float?

Thanks for the tips.
Cheers,

Doug

I've not had very good luck soldering old cracked brass floats. The heat causes a stress crack to open up somewhere else.

I just got laughed out of two autoparts shops, they said they have no idea where to find a new brass float.

Any suggestions?

You can get a replacement float from your local Ford dealer too...just a couple bucks. I thought I had the number written down somewhere here, but I can't find it. However, IIRC that float was used up through the '90s on many different sending units, so the dealers might even have them in stock.

I seem to recall hearing the LMC floats sink.

Just about any parts store has them, only the replacements aren't brass anymore, it's some type of foam. Got one a few years back for the Falcon, and recently got one for the '69. They're something like 3 or 4 bucks.

man at work we have those round brass floats by the case. Your Napa must not service any big rig fleets, That round brass float is fairly common in the commercial truck industry.
