Ignition Resistance Wire for 72 F250 - CS
Our resistance wire from the ignition switch to the coil shorted out and burned. This occured before we bought the truck.
Anyway I called around town and none of the auto electrical stores are familiar with this type of wire.
Would anyone know where I can buy it? Should I just get an ignition wire harness?
Thanks!

I don't know were that wire can be had new. maybe Dow Merrit or similar electrical supply outfit. A resistor block and regular wire, or pick and pull for used one.

i believe autozone has 18 gauge resistance wires. as for the length and ohms someone else will have to answer that. or just grab a new harness from a junk yard truck.

Thanks - Thats a great start.. I must have found the wrong person at NAPA - He knew nothing abouth this wire.. I'll check with the Autozone affiliate here and watch this thread..
I hope to be able to run a new wire from the ignition switch to the firewall harness bypassing the old burnt wire.. or - If we found the resistance I could possibly add a resistor to basic wire and match the original wire resistance.. Just another thought..

The PO of my 72 had the same problem. He used a ballast resistor from early 70's Chrysler products. It works fine.

Thanks for the link and idea reference the ballast resistor. I'll call NAPA again today and check on these parts.. According to the schematic the resistance wire portion of the circiut stops at the firewall and is a normal wire from there to the coil (where the start relay wire joins the circuit). Is this correct or should I run the resistance wire all the way to the coil?

I would agree... The Pink wire is the resistance wire and the Red-Green wire is normal wire... I looked at all the schematic for all the years and they show it this way. The zigzag in the wire on some of the schematics is the symbol for resistance... The others say "resistance wire" for the Pink wire…DGrant09 wrote:According to the schematic the resistance wire portion of the circiut stops at the firewall and is a normal wire from there to the coil (where the start relay wire joins the circuit). If only your Red-Green wire needs replaced you should be good with regular wire.
You can check it with a volt meter, turn the ignition on and measure the voltage; if you have around 7-9 Volts going to the coil then your good.

The resistance wires are still available. The Neihoff number is FF129 and the Borg Warner number is RU13. Ask the parts store for an ignition coil resistor, the part in the box is the wire.
They are listed in Parts America.com. If you use Parts America, you can print out the page and take it into any Checker, Schucks or Kragens store depending on where you live and they will give you the on-line price.

re: Ignition Resistance Wire for 72 F250 - CS
I do the same with Partsamerica here in Alaska when we buy from them. The prices 90% of the time are lower (I do not believe they add the canned shipping fees they charge in the stores). The second benefit is just as you mentioned. - Seeing the part and applications.
Thanks for the parts info!! I have these booked marked and will probably get one of these. I am not near the truck today but the only question I have is how to connect this to the ignition switch and then the firewall harness? I was considering normal wire off of the ignition swictch into a connection with the resistance wire and then just before the firewall harness we'll make a connection with the start relay wire and run that to the coil, bypassing the old firewall connection. Eventially we'd like to do the complete truck wire harness but we need to work to that point.
Thanks!!
