Need trouble shooting advice

Post by FLATBEDFORD »

Sorry about the non-specific title. My '70 F350 platform/stake has one of those back-up beepers. It seems to get it's power from the driver's side back-up light. With lights on the beeper gets very quiet. If I put my foot on the brake and the headlights are on it stops. It seems to work OK with the brake lights and no headlights. With no other lights, it works fine. The back-up lights still light up with or without the other lights on. I haven't looked very deeply into this. I don't know where to start. Maybe the beeper needs a better ground? Could the other lights be messing it up through some kind of ground leak? My limited electrical knowledge leaves me stumped.

OK... check and recheck EVERY ground connection... then verify them.

Make sure you have a good ground between body, engine and frame.

From what I read about your issue, this will eliminate your problem...

I figured its a ground issue. What doesn't make sense is that only the stupid beeper has a problem and the lights are unaffected. I'll start with beeper's ground and work from there. The wiring, except the beeper, appears to be original and unmolested.

You might even want to replace the wiring for the beeper. I might appear to be intact, but it may be completely corroded inside the insulation. Therefore, not getting good conductivity. Just a thought. :dk: I just replaced all the wires for all the lights on the whole back half of the dump truck.
