Tips - Starter bolts

Post by import600 »

Have any of you guys had issues with bolts heads torking off? what do you do to avoid or stop this?

The starter post leading to the soilinoid torqued off. so when I went to pull the starter to replace this it felt like the bolts holding it to the tranny, were going to torque off. so i stopped. I would like to avoid at all costs to retap the holes. I don't know how to do nor do I have the means to.

Is there anyway to replace that starter post without pulling the starter?

Thanks
Kyle

I probably am wrong, but seems I recall one of my starter bolts kept working loose (thinkint it's top one??) and it was the threads gone (does it thread stock into bellhousing? Can't recall), but anyhow, used split washer and nut on transmission side and although it's aggravating to get to, it's staying tight now, although I don't get to drive mine much for working through bugs due to 40 years of abuse/minimal care by prior owners.

Don't overtorgue I always am afraid of braking bolts so I just take it easy. I still have an exhaust leak on my 250 because I am afraid I will sheer the studs for the donut off and be in worse shape.

Buy a new starter.

NAPA sells the post but you have to pull the end off the Starter. Book time to change the starter in 1976 was .3, to change the post .3 plus the starter R&R time. It was faster to swap the starter than .3 but never faster to change the post than .3 so the pay for the post change came to .8 and we lost our speed pay messing with the post.

Change the starter.

Put a new starter on mine during the partial rebuild-took about 20 minutes to R&R, plus you will have piece of mind that you have a new starter installed. Mine came from Autozone, Lifetime warranty, for about $50! Know some people don't like AZ, but I have yet to take one back in 20+ years!!!!!!! :D
