ranger under dash ac help.
I just got a under dsah ac that has the glove box in it. I am looking to install it in my 70 ranger. My question is will it bolt right up to a dash/cab that did not originally have the ac (are the holes already predrilled). I have never used one of these systems so I am hoping it will be an easy install and it will put out a high enough volume of air to reach me when I am driving. anybody else done this swap?

I wouldn't even bother. There is so much that can go wrong with that- compressor, receiver-dryer, condenser, blower and heater core- I just don't have the time with which to gamble. THEN, you'll have to have the system evacuated and filled with??
Not to mention the loss of legroom...

I dont agree with you on the ac system I have. Its has the york style compressor which one of the most comman one used and is still used to this day on heavy equipment and international semi's and many others. they are indestructable which is why they are known to be used for making an on board air compressor for air tools. as far as the rest of the system like the reciever dryer if you are going to install a ac system you would want to replace these anyways. as far as evacuating and charging its the same thing all stuff that is normal with an ac system. I happen to have an ac machine since I am a road mechanic. I know kragens sells a conversion kit I just dont know what all you have to do. I can get a condensor at napa for 82.99
as far as cost goes I will only have at most $225 into it with conversion kit.
I am not worried about leg room because I wont be driving in the passanger seat. I dont think My 14 month old son will car either since he is still in his car seat. I like the looks of the stock ac unit especially since I am doing a RESTORE. Iwould rather not have any after market looking stuff.
fitzwell I will have pics up soon been kinda hectic with the move back to california.

I'm fitting that suitcase-style A/C setup into my '67 too. The holes aren't drilled through the firewall, but the firewall does have dimples where you need to drill.

are keeping yours R12 or going to convert it. if so what all do you have to do. Remember the late 80's and early 90's when r-134a first came on the scene. everyone complained that the air wasn't very good. it was the the fact that the components were not designed for 134a. now do you hear that complaint. the evap and condensors have been designed to work with 134. I would stay with r-12. You will get better performance from the original set-up.

I agree....if you can find the R-12, just stay with that. However, it's really not too difficult a job to convert, though based on what I've heard, you might need to get a slightly larger condenser to realize the full effects.
