re: light flicker
I did the one-wire alt conversion to get mine to stop and resolve a few other issues. I have also heard that you can replace the regulator with a solid state regulator. That is the one that is not as tall as the origonal one you now have. I am not sure of the details on doing it.

I would say "NO", but I am no expert.
I have heard that when you replace one the other should be replaced.

re: light flicker
The alternator does not provide a true DC power. The power tends to have a pulse. From my investigations, I think the flickering in the headlights has a number of contributing factors. First, the power quality - the pulse from the alternator. Second, everything including the headlight switch gets old. The switch's internal contacts and circuit breaker age aggravating the flicker or pulsing. Third, the wires and their connections also corrode as they age. The wires are just large enough for their intended load. Any bad connections increase resistance and decrease available voltage. Particularly, the ground should be checked. The ground circuit often gets ignored during regular maintenance. Fourth, the electrical design does not leave much margin for inefficiencies in the circuits. The total sum of these aging issues create the condition. I see this flickering on my truck when I installed 55/60 watt H4s. One suggested solution is to install relays and power the lights directly from a power source (the battery solenoid terminal). The relays are controlled by the headlight switch. Better power, having a higher voltage, to the headlights will give you better light and should increase safety. Depending upon the added accessories you may consider a higher amp alternator also. The stock alternator just provides enough power.
PS Check two other things. 1) The alternator belt to see if it is slipping. And 2) listen to the headlight switch when the truck is running and lights are on. If you hear the switch chattering then the circuit breaker is cycling on and off and the switch needs to be changed.
