Manual transmission / neutral safety switch

Post by FORDification »

OK...I'm going to have to ask a question that I think a few of us were wondering (well, at least one of us was!) ;)

In a recent thread where we were discussing a transmission swap from a 3-spd. manual to an automatic, the topic of the neutral safety switch came up. The question was how to convert the 3-spd's NSS wiring to the automatic's. It had been a long time since I drove a truck with a 4-speed, so I couldn't remember exactly, and decided to let someone else answer the question with the answer that I WANTED to say, but was too afraid too in case I was mistaken. However, the answer never came and the focus of the thread changed course. But the subject has been on my mind for several days now. I've poured over the parts manuals, diagrams, etc. in an effort to verify what I thought..and am now pretty sure that this statement is correct:

Ford light-duty trucks equipped with a manual transmission do not have a neutral safety switch of any kind! You can start the engine simply by turning the key, regardless of the shifter position, clutch position or whether or not the transmission is in gear. There is nothing on the clutch pedal to prevent starting it...that kind of NSS was an innovation that came about years later. And the only wiring connection on the 4-spd transmissions themselves is the switch for the backup lights. (The backup light switch for the 3-speed is at the base of the column.) That is why the wiring harness connection for the NSS is bypassed by the factory on trucks with manual transmissions...it's simply not needed.

Correct? :o

On my 67 I feel safe in saying there is no NSS on manual trucks. I have had the pedals out and back in nothing but the brake light switch. the only electrical switch I found on the np435 is the reverse light switch.

I agree i have accidentally started my truck in gear and almost ran over my self in the process!!!! I was starting it from the engine bay and forgot to take it out of gear
[edit] My brothers 1989 Ford f-150 had a safety switch in the hydralic clutch so at some point they obviouly started putting them in!!!

Yep. IIRC no NSS on manuals in pickups or trucks. The only NSS I can recall in a manual was on some of the T5s.

I agree here, before I did the swap, I had started my truck in gear too. scared the heck outta me.

Never a neutral safety switch but in later years a clutch safety switch.

I use that no safety switch to my advantage. Prior to pulling rocks out of the ground I stand outside of the truck and move the truck with the starter only so I can see if the chain is going to slip. Crazy yes but it works.

You could easily adapt a newer clutch pressure switch to the clutch pedal linkage and wire it with the bypassed NSS wires.

A add on Harley aftermarket brake light Switch that has a spring on it. It turns on when you pull tt and off when you release it. The spring helps the switch by keeping it from being pulled too far. Wire the ignition to solenoid starter wire the switch and from the switch to the solenoid. The Starter will only work when the spring pulls the switch on.
