Parts numbers question

Post by GT-Racer »

I have always in the past heard that a part number such as c8e3..... meant that it was a '68 part. This was also what I found by going on a search.

But lately i have been seeing alot of posts that have said that c8 just meant it was off a car and didnt neccessarily mean what year. can anyone clear this up for me? I dont remember the exact post but I believe it was in regards to a set of heads. Thanks in advance.

I don't know where you've been hearing that rubbish, but I'd suggest taking anything they tell you with a grain of salt.

The casting number will designate the year a part was originally designed and the vehicle it was originally designed for. This does not mean that the part was not used on other vehicles or subsequent years. The first letter of the standard 4-digit prefix gives the decade, the following number gives the year of the decade....just like described at the link you posted.

Thank you ... Thats what I thought but wanted to make sure.

Ok did they use this badge on 67-72 trucks as well? This came with my parts truck.

Yes, that glovebox emblem was used on all '67-'72 Rangers. Take a look at other available glovebox emblems on the Body Trim & Insignias page.

Uh, You are confusing part numbers with engineering numbers. The C5GB only notes that the chrome die cast part was designed for a 65 Comet. The decal in it that says Ranger makes it a 67-72 part. you will also find the same bezel with a "High Output" logo, but don't too excited, the "High Output" nameplate was used on Econoline Vans with high output heaters! Sometimes they would implement a part right away instead of waiting for the model year ie on a '65 you might find a part with a C6 engineering number.

That is extremely rare and unusual and there are very few cases of that. Where it is common is when there is a mid year model like a 64 1/2 Mustang which is listed by ford as a 65 or a 68 1/2 Lincoln Mark III which is listed by Ford as a 69. The only large scale example I know of next years parts on a previous years model is the 68 302 engine pieces that were used on very late 67 Mustangs. This actually occured due to a full changeover of the foundry line when the newer revised parts were designed and were used immediately. I have never seen another example of wholesale use of the next years parts so it is pretty uncommon. Hawkrod

Yes it is very uncommon and I probably shouldn't have used those years 'cause I can't think of any examples.

But here's an example for our year trucks, sometime in the summer of '71 they changed over to '72 axles.

Actually Boss 302 Mustangs did that as well. The mid year introduction of the 1969 Boss 302 saw the use of a D0ZA front spindle assembly. The really weird part about this is that this particular part was only used on a 69 Boss 302 and was not used on a 70 Mustang or Boss! LOL Hawkrod
