67-72 "Super" Camper Special ?

Post by FoMoCo »

I was wondering if these were made during the years of 67-72. Ive only seen one in a later body, 76 I think. These are definantly the best looking lwb trucks ever. It's very hard to find info on these but basically they have the spare tire mounted in a huge bed-side box like the regular CS's but the unique feature is the wheelbase. It looks like a pulling truck as there's only inches between the rear wheel well and tailgate.

Nope, 1973 first year of Super Camper Special.

They are an interesting truck, you either love 'em or hate 'em.

All were made in the 73-79 model years and were F-350. Interesting is the fact the rear tires were bigger than the fronts (wider wheels too) I don't know of any other truck that ever came with different sized tires.

Willow, are your sure all were F350s? I've got a buddy that has a real nice one (I think he's selling it) and I swear it's an F250. I've always thought them to be odd looking, but certainly useful, so I give them a break for that. I always thought it would be cool to bob the front half off one of the beds and make a cool hot rod swb out of an F150.
That's MR. Jackass to you fellah!

Yes, all of the SCS's were F350's as a matter of fact all trucks with the bed that had a storage for a spare tire in the side were F350's. The bed side storage was a feature of the 140 inch wheel base chassis when equipped with a fleet side bed and that was a combination that was only offered on the F350. The Super Camper Special was a package that was available on these trucks but not all of these trucks are SCS's. A regular Camper Special was not available with the bedside spare tire carrier although the later SCS's only have CS logo's so it gets confusing. A regular long bed pickup has a 133 inch wheel base so these trucks have the axle moved back 7 inches from the normal location. Another tidbit about the 140 chassis is the fact that it is an F350 so it has the narrow rear frame section like a Crew Cab or a High Boy or any of the earlier 72 and older pickups so if you are looking for an under bed gas tank for any of these other models keep your eyes open for these trucks. Also, these trucks had a Dana 70 with single rear wheels and the narrow spring perches so they swap easily into earlier F250's, 4X4's and Crew Cabs as well. The SCS's did have the 9.75 X 16.5 rims in the back as has already been mentioned and if you like the look they are cool. I have 4 of these rims on my 77 1/2 F250 4X4 with the stainless caps. If you are using them on a disc brake front end be sure to check clearance as there are more than one version of these wheels and some have an extra bit of metal that needs to be ground off to clear (very minor and very easy). I also have a pair of these wheels on the back of my Crew Cab which gives a very nice big and little look to it. Hawkrod

Yeah, I saw one the other day. The guy who owned it was using it for parts at first glance I thought it was odd looking because of the location of the rear wheel is so far back. A very rare truck around these here. :fte:

I guess I thought they were all camper specials. I never got into it too far I guess. I had a couple customers with those. Couldn't you also get a SCS with a super cab and regular bed?
Also interesting is that all the 78-79 F-350 4x4s I have seen came with a Dana 60 rear (and front)

Nope! An SCS is only a regular cab fleetside F350, nothing else. A Super Cab with a Camper Special package would just be a regular Camper Special (got one I am cutting up right now: http://www.supermotors.org/vehicles/reg ... ?id=194083 If you have microscopes for eyes you can see the Camper Special emblem just under the front marker light). What made it a Super Camper Special was the extended wheel base and high load capacity from the special frame and suspension. The 77 1/2-79 F350 4X4 did not have a Dana 70 rear because it shared the frame with the F250 4X4 and those had the same rear spring spacing as a 2 wheel drive F100 F150 and F250 while other F350's had the special narrow spring spacing like a High Boy or an older truck. It did not make sense to tool up for a special application rear end that would not fit other models especially when Ford did not anticipate selling many anyway. Hawkrod
