Exactly! But there are no spliced wires that I can see. It looks like the wire goes directly into the plug as it should.

It works just as it should when the doors are opened,...as long as the light switch is in the driving lights on position. I'll have to look into the door switches to eliminate the possibility that they could be bad, and see if I can narrow this down to the exact problem. Thanks for all the ideas so far.

Been looking at this all day and I modified a drawing for you here that has the wires and where they go... You can check these out with a test light.
Note: that there are two connections that aren't used but one of them only has power when the switch is in the "running lights" aka "park lights" position... wonder if someone wired the power wire for the dome light to it???
