Quck ignition question

Post by Jaybird324 »

Lights and everything work with the ignition in the run position, but the truck wont start. I can jump it and get it to run with a screwdriver, and it will turn off with the ignition then. LMC has the cylineder w/ keys, and also other parts of the ignition....I'm assuming my switch is bad, but what do I need to order?

Before you order parts... Is this an Automatic? it could be the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS)...
If you look at the wires coming out of the Ignition switch hook a test light to the "Red-Blue stripe" wire and see if it has power when you turn the key to "Start" if it does then you have a problem down line (NSS) to the solenoid... If not then your Ignition switch is bad...

I'm not "Brand Loyal" Ford-Chevy-Dodge-Toyota I have them all, one even cross mixed...
If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...

hold the automatic gear shift over towards park as you try to start it.

I had the same problem. I bypassed the NSS and she cranks right up. Here it the post that helped me.

I almost lost my left leg because of a bypassed neutral switch and a mickey moused installation. The Shifter was up side down. The kid I was with wanted this camaro. The battery was dead and we pulled another car in front of it on this lot. Jumping it With the shifter in Park (actually in First) The car fired up and jumped forward. The point in the front of the camaro bumper hit the bumper of the other car and stopped it from crushing my left leg.

I would not be here today working on Ford Trucks and wiring buildings if I was not very lucky.

Don't bypass the neutral switch except to see if it is bad.

Don't get me wrong, I plan to fix my NSS eventually.

did you guys try holding your shifter over first to see if the nss was just out of adjustment first. those nss switches are kind of high dollar. something like 55.00 new.

I see what kid is sayin, but the NSS won't stop it from going in gear if the shifter is not hooked up right..that was not the fault of the NSS..Park must be Park for them to work....or neutral-neutral..Y'all know what I'm saying..A NSS have almost cause me to wreck before, I don't like them, but I don't like seat belts. helmet laws, lights on laws...blah blah..laws for this yada, yada. laws for that...Guess I'm Just unsafe   ..but there is no law againts drinking & hunting  go figure....NO I don't drink & use guns!!!

Yeah, I tried holding the shifter over towards park...even pushed the button by hand...still had to bypass it.
