Power steering; what all do I need?

Post by Iron Man »

In addition to converting my venerable old '68 F-250 to power drum brakes, I'm converting it to power steering. What all parts do I need to make this conversion? My donor truck is a 1971 F-250, both trucks have 360's, my '68 is a four-speed while the '71 is a automatic. Power steering pump, double water pump pulley, power steering sector, the hoses, and the column (or at least the shaft)? No parts of the actual steering gear? I tried looking for the info but most of what I found pertained to converting 1973 to 1978 stuff over, not what I'll be doing. I want to be sure to get everything I'll need because when I'm done, the salvage yard guy says so is the truck. It's been a nice one in it's day, power steering, power brakes, factory under dash air, over the road mirrors etc, but cancer has claimed the body.

May wonders never cease. I look under the tech and tutorials and there is a list which tells me everything I'll need. What a great site. I'll start looking before asking now. Thanks.

The only fly in the oitment is the column. The 68 and 71 will interchange with the modification to the wires in the connector. The shafts between the 68 and 71 will most likely not interchange due to a variation in the mast length. I went through 4 columns to get the right one, and all were P/S columns. It is easiest to change the whole thing but I always like to keep the one that the truck came with and just change the shaft.

Can't I just shorten the threaded end of the '71 shaft for use with the original steering wheel and use it in the '68 tube or shorten the '68 shaft two to two-and-a-half inches and use it in the original '68 tube with the power steering sector? Is there something more?

With the above, you wont have to shorten the colum. :lolprev:

I cannot afford such things so I've resorted to hacking. I got a 66 column that barly extendeds past the firewall mount, but the shaft is the same length as my 67 shaft. I also got hold of a nice saginaw box for nothing. I plan to cut the shaft at the rag joint end and TIG weld it in the proper location. We'll see how this goes.

:yt:If you can shorten your old shaft that is best, no messing with some other old junk column. And the Sag. boxes are everywhere, used through the 1979 model. I just threw a couple away as I had so many laying around.
Look in my want ads. I have all the pulleys, pump with bracket and the firewall column bracket.

JB,

If it is possible to shorten the mast on the original column, do you still need the firewall bracket that you have or do you just keep the original. If I need a new one I'll be sending you a PM.

Thanks,
Lee

The mast doesn't need shortened, just the shaft. And you still need the bracket, unless you want to spend an hour with the die grinder wollering out the holes like I did on my first one back in 87.
