how important is the stator wire to the charging system?

how important is the stator wire to the charging system?
just curios as i have seen several trucks including my sport custom without them is this wire just part of the shunt for the ammeter guage equiped trucks?

Near as I can remember, you only need a wire there if you have a electrically heated automatic choke.
