re: questions about my truck

The first picture is the brake system warning light.

Nobody here would have any idea what the previous owner of your truck hooked up to that switch. Have you tried following the wires to see where they lead?

darn, i was hoping the first pic was switch for the valve or something. and i was hoping the second pic was a factory thing. I need to ask the PO why he did all this crazy stuff to the truck. yeah, but under my dash is a jungle of wires. the buttons wires lead to a bunch that are taped together and i havent traced it all the way yet. maybe this weekend ill take the time. what about the fog lights that were mounted on top of my bumper? maybe the button turns those on? i have no clue

ill take a pic of my wire jungle in a few minutes.

my dad just told me that he traced the wires coming from the far left thing in the first pic and they went to the tank switch.
i wish this was all simple but it is so complicated

Actually, it's been my experience that the saddle tanks don't have a sending unit....they're for storage only. Here's a couple pictures of the dealer-installed saddle tank from a '70 CS I parted out a while back:

http://www.fordification.com/images/Ueh2_70CS02.jpg

The factory auxiliary tank setups that I've seen had the switch under the dash with a bezel marked for the main and auxiliary tanks, pictured below on the right side. However, I have run across a bezel that is marked 'L' and 'R' for left/right tanks (at left in pic below), which I can only assume is for a saddle tank kit...a different variety than what's pictured above, with tanks set up with a sending unit. However, since there's no 'main' setting on that bezel....I'm thinking it's part of the dealer add-on tank kit, and the kit would include a new three-way electrical switch, with the middle position being the main tank. Can anyone else shed some light on this?

Image
Keith, where did you find that L/R switch!?!? Im wanting that exact part! its not in any of the parts catalogs, though the main, aux one is.

The way i was going to hook it all up is main reads main tank, Aux hooks to second switch, which you then tell it left or right. This would have been easy for a dealer to install. just put it inline off the aux position.

I had been thinking of how i was going to get one made, but if they already exist...

That picture was just something I saved from an E-bay listing a while back. At least now you know they exist, right? ;)

well since this post was brought back to life...
that round switch to the far left is the brake warning light, my dad was talking about a different switch.
in the second pic, that square button, i was able to trace one wire coming off of it which went to the fuel unit doohicky under the cab.

im quessing the square button goes to the aftermarket fog lights that i took off. just a guess though. but its weird because two of the wires coming from that switch go under the dash and just stop.
i really need to start ripping all the electrical tape stuff off the wires so i can trace everything.
well thats it for now.

the wires that i traced to the headlights ( by the way, they only went to the left headlight, but i think if i traced more wires some would go to the other headlight as well) were coming off of the black switch not the button. on the button, i have traced 3 wires. two go to the glovebox and just end, and the other wire goes through the cab floor and goes into the fuel valvy thingy under the cab. i can get some pictures.

so thats all the wires i have traced. the others are more difficult because they are buried way up in the dash. ill get to them sometime though. tomorrow i will continue tracing

oh, and i have tried pushing the button and flipping the switch when the key is turned to the left but nothing happens. well maybe if the headlights were on and i tried flipping the switch and pushing the button something would happen. ill try that tomorrow also.

no..... its got to be just another weird PO thing. maybe the PO didnt like the switch being on the floor so he relocated it to the dash because i can see where he switched back to old wiring under the dash.
