Headliner question..

Post by Darrman »

I removed the headliner tonite, warped but not in that bad a shape. However I want to completly replace it, I have done this to my Explorers before. They use a molded foam shell, this truck has just the cardboard shell. My question is, what is the name for this cardboard? I am trying to find some somewhere, but dont have the right name.
I had to evict some field mice, they made nests on top of the heater and the headliner. At least they didnt chew anything up that I have seen.

I think I have heard others refer to it as hardboard, in some of the other threads on headliners.

Thanks, I am going to try to find some to duplicate the old one. If I cant find it, I guess I will have to think of some thing new, I may try my hand at fiberglass, and mold some tweeters into the liner.

Hey Darrman...

Do a forum search for: $10.00 headliner

There a very good thread about making one and some stuff a whole better to use than Masonite or hard board.

Dumb question, what is the stock headliner like in our trucks? Mine has been gone for a long time, all I have is the roof sheet metal. The inside of my truck echoes like a cavern, and the sound is deafening in heavy rain.

I figured it was some kind of foam which was covered with cloth like in passenger cars. You guys are saying it's some kind of board, like Masonite?

Just as a thought, what about using Homasote as an insulation, you could easily glue or staple something on top of that to make it look pretty.

I think Hardee Board is a concrete board used as a backing for ceramic tile?

The stock original headliner was a perferated fiber board, but not nearly as stiff as masonite or hard board.
I don't think Masonite works very good ... it's too stiff.

Do a forum search for the thread " $10.00 headliner " and check that out it goes into pretty good detail and shows one that looks really good.

Here is a couple pics of what the stock looks like, the first pic is really bad, I tried to show the perforations under the carpet. There isnt any foam, just cardboard, and carpet, I guess originaly glued on, but not anymore. The little piece of wood in the second pic is key to mouning it to the center metal roof support.

I spent a half hour in the local thread, fabric and whatever else shop(Jo Ann's) here in Vancouver, looking for some good vinyl to glue to the custom piece of cardboard I stuck up there. Well, I got it all done and it don't look bad(black covers a lot)but I did find out they sell,of all things, headliner material. No ,I haven't gone back to look yet,but apparently its foam backing with colored something or other on it. Anyhow, there's a thought for ya. Check yer local fabric store.

I am still looking around for backing material, I looked at hardboard at Home Depot, not the same thing, more like stuff clipboards are made of. Its a lot heavier than stock and I am afraid of humidity and moisture will warp it within a couple years.
The highliner that LMC sells is pretty cool, but a little old fashioned. I am wanting something more like todays headliner, but with the tweeters molded in, and maybe a console/info center, with a compass and temp. I have one in my jeep and have grown used to looking up to see what direction I am going in, etc.

i just bought some hardboard(im pretty sure thats the name, and it isnt as stiff as a clip board, it is pretty flexible) from Lowe's for 13.00. i also went to the fabric store and bought some blue vinyl. im going to cut the board into shape and mist/iron the corners to mold them correctly. i hope it works! ill let you know on how it goes. i have the material right now but im waiting on my dad to pick up a tool that can cut the board with out it chipping.
