slipping out of park
my truck slipped out of park today almost rolling back into another car..was this ever a recall? it sounded like the wheel of fortune but slower like it did not catch the gears. is this common? oh and I had to put the e-brake on after that....didn't take it off though and drove 27 miles with it on. it did not seem to provide very much resistance which might be bad.

Well, not a 'recall' exactly, but there WAS a lot of bad publicity of Ford trucks popping out of Park, which led to Ford sending out letters to truck owners with a warning decal that they recommended be attached inside the cab. It is a p[roblem with them. I had a 72 that had the sticker in it. I bought a 68 F-250 a few years back in Seattle and had to ride the ferry home. I was setting in it idling for a minute when I first parked and it jumped into reverse almost hitting the car behind. When I got home I adjusted the linkage and it never did it again.
Last winter I stopped at a local small carlot to look at a red 68 Ranger shortbed. It was on consignment. The rear bumper was just horse shoed. The owner of the carlot had left it on high idle to charge the battery and it jumped into reverse and dead centered one of the parking lot bollards.
When you drive one of these old trucks you make it a conditioned response to make sure you have indexed the shifter into the notch when you put it in park, they jump out because we are sloppy and just shove the lever up there. If you make the deliberate effort to push it foreward into the notch, I don't think it will ever jump out.

this happened in a 78 f150 i used to have, no accident story, , was able to hop back in and stop it. (ever seen a fat guy haul ass and only make one trip? ) but i made sure i never left it running unattended in park again.

its only happened twice to me...and when it did it did not really seem to switch gears. It sounded like a really slow wheel of fortune wheel.. like a gear was hitting something
