Post by aramil »

my uncle has an 80 somthin f 150 that he is taking partsfrom, and i was wondering if i could pull the stereo and put it in my truck, i cant afford an after market head unit yet, so it would only be temporary but would it work? it looks like it would work and im tired of the am radio.

Sure....but I doubt it'll fit the dash without cutting it up. But PLEASE don't cut the dash to make it fit. Since you said it's just temporary, why not mount it under the dash for now? It'll get you by until you can get something to mount in the dash permanently.

thats kind of what i was planning on, because i dont want to tear up my dash because its in very good shape, i think the interior is the best part of my truck, i dont want it looking crappy.

For the in-dash fit an AM/FM or possibly an AM/FM/Cassette from a mid to late 70s Ford truck will fit in the dash of the 68-72 F Series trucks. I have a 1978 AM/FM radio (not stereo) in my 1968 F100. I just found it a weekend ago thrown behind the seat of the truck I was looking in.

For the in-dash look you have to find a "truck" radio / stereo that has the tuning arms that have the threads that extend out past the radio dial face. The 1980 to 1986 pickup radios have the shorter car-type tuning arms on them making them too short for a good fit in the early radio faceplate.

You will also need an extra pair of tuning arm nuts to install behind the radio face (or I did anyway) to back up the radio faceplate and get the radio or stereo to tighten down to the radio face correctly.

Compare the AM radio in your truck to the stereo out of the 80s truck and you will see the difference in the lengths of the threaded tuning arms (the things the radio knobs install onto).
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!
