factory AM radio wiring
what do the wires go to that come off a AM factory radio? i grabbed a AM radio from a junkyard, the wire with the bulb was complete , 2 wires were cut a inch farther than a 2 wire plug, and 1 wire goes into a white plastic thing and goes about 6 inches until it is cut. where do these go to?
all the speaker wires in my truck are spliced and lead to a big plug (4 males, one female). so i need to know how to wire this bad boy up
here are the wires coming off of the radio:
these are the wires coming straight from the speakers. The big grey things are just the covers that protect the speaker wires. then the speaker wires get spliced into this funky plug
so, what do the wires go to that come off a AM factory radio?

You can keep the "stock AM radio look" if you can locate an FM Converter. An FM Converter is tuned to around 1400 AM frequency and then sends it's received FM signals to the AM radio through the antenna cables. The antenna cable from outside plugs into the converter and the antenna plug coming from the converter goes to the original AM radio. You power the converter from a key-activated fused hot and I believe the converter also has it's own ground that goes to the body of the vehicle it is installed in.
When working with Ford wiring from the 60s, and 70s always remember, if it is coming from the main wiring into a plug to power a component or option of some type, or if it coming out of something like a radio into a plug (i.e. speaker connection plug) the HOT or positive connection(s) will always be a female connector. The ground or return will always be a male connector.
The 5 wire plug in the one picture here is a factory 4 speaker stereo speaker connector. The white and orange wires would go to front speakers, if so equipped, and the two pink ones (one with a blue stripe and one with a green stripe if I remember correctly) would power the rear speakers. A vehicle with a two spwaker stereo system will have a three wire connector feeding the front speakers and only the black (with white dash or stripe) which is the negative wire, the white (with green stripe I believe) and the orange (with a green stripe I believe) wires would be in the connector.
Even though the connector types have changed through the years you can still find these speaker wire colors in vehicles into the early to mid 90s (that I have looked for parts in).
I hope this helps anyone else that might find a newer type late 70s am/fm or am/fm/cassette pickup stereo they want to back-fit into their older pickup, or vice-versa.
What is really neat is seeing the factory CB relay that cuts the late 70s stereo door speakers OR dash speaker off when the CB radio is keyed for transmitting or receives CB incoming audio from other CB'ers.

well since you brought this thread back up..
since i got my 69, i have learned that a original speaker is mounted in the middle of the dash, and that is what the holes are for in the dash(to let sound through). I also learned that the AM wiring coming from my am radio that i talked about in this thread, was suppose to just click into the original speaker plug. even though i dont have a original speaker in the 71. that solved a few mysteries for me
