Smokin' starter!

Post by nikon4u »

I keep burning up my starter with my headers being as close as they are to it. What have you guys used to solve this? If the answer is a mini high-torque starter, then which one exactly. Should you wrap the headers, I have heard that will cause them to rust out quickly. I have seen starter wraps, but I wonder if that will cut off airflow to it, so is it better to wrap it or to leave it so it can get some air to cool it. I need some response soon because my starter is making some odd noises and I need to get a solution today :help:

I'm using the Powermaster starter and I had my headers jet-hot ceramic coated inside and out. Bring your wallet. Here's the link:

That link won't work, but it's a 9506 (I believe). Look at the Powermaster site to determine your application. I bought mine from a member here who had gone a different direction.
I'm assuming you have an FE..

I don't know anything about the Jegs brand. My exhaust guy, who's seen these hundreds of times, said I bought the "right" starter, meaning the Powermaster. But the jegs might be just fine. I just HATE the idea of doing anything twice (well, just about anything) especially a starter change.

I also replaced all my primary wiring with 2/0 wire with soldered connections. Not #2, 2/0. It reduces strain on the electrical system, and delivers the power when/where it's needed, especially for a heat-soaked starter.

Not sure I know what the difference is in the 2 wires.

Different gauges- 00 or 2/0 has a diameter of .3648 in and #2 is .2576. Or, more simply, 2/0 is bigger and fatter. And a lot more expensive. But when dealing with big-amp DC, size matters.

You could always fab up a metal/aluminum heat shield between the headers and the starter if you have room. Just something to absorb, deflect the heat coming off the headers.

Thanks Patrick, but that's what I did with the old one, and it kept air from going around it.

if you can get a mini starter that would be the best way to go and keep the headers. the only other way i can see to go is to get rid of the headers.
