lighting laws....and our trucks

Post by layedout72 »

When I start my body work (read: a good while from now) I really want to run LED's for tail lights. I want a strip of red, a strip of amber, and a strip of white. That way I have fully functioning lights.

After asking around it seems that new cars have to be able to relect light from the sides if light is shined at the lens. Is this correct? I really don't want to run stock lights, or a big bulky light. The LED's would fit perfect in the indention on the back of our trucks where it meets the tailgate!

you dont have to upgrade to a reflector unless your truck orignally came equipped with one. it is the grandfather clause. that makes you not have to do that. but all 67=72 had a reflector on the back of the trucks at the bottom under the tailight.

thats what i thought, but mine even has them on the side...where the body line goes flat, it has one about 3 inches long on both sides.

then the reflector has to stay on the truck. that wont affect the tail light leds though.

i was thinkin of putting some 1.5 inch led strips that turn on with the tails, but don't get brake light power....if thats even possible. I would think it is though. That way I have something that produces light on the sides of the truck. the reflectors are all butt ugly. some flush mount LED's would make it 10x nicer.

i would hope the cops would give me a break for trying to comply with the rules...

Actually, the '67s didn't have any reflectors....the reflectors didn't appear until the '68 model year, and on the '68s they were only on the sides, not in back under the taillights. It wasn't until the '69 model year that there were reflectors under both taillights and on the side of the box. The '70-'72 had the illuminated side markers and a rear reflector.
