flickering tail lights

Post by jschreiner »

Had nothing to do today, it is in the 80s here, so I was playing with the old ford ,just checking things out and I saw the tail flickering with the park lights on,turn on the head lights and they stop flickering. Any clue? Jay

I thought flickering lights usually means bad ground?

Check to make sure your grounds are not corroded and are touching clean metal.

It could also be something as silly as the bulb is not tight in the socket, and is not grounding properly!

I have the same kind of problem, bad ground on light plate thingy. So, I took a piece of wire and put it in the socket and put the light bulb in around it. Then put the other side to a ground. Kinda redneck/lazy.

Hey all, I thought it may be a ground, so I hooked a wire from the tail light assembly to the frame on both sides, nothing changed. I had the engine off. The front lights flicker also. Dash lights do not. Turn the head lights on and all is fine. Only happens when just the park lights are on. I also changed the switch. Any ideas now? Jay

it could be in the turn signal switch i guess that would be the next major bad spot for these kind of things.

The Turn signal switch will not affect the park lights, no connection...

The light switch has a built in circuit breakers, one for the headlights and one for the park/tail lights. Sounds like you have too much of a load somewhere in the park lights... When you turn on the headlights the front park lights go off (if it is 67-69) and the load is less, so no flickering... You could have a partial short on the front park lights causing it also (if it is 67-69)…

Do you have any other lights wired in?

Found the problem. The front light sockets were corroded. Guess I should have checked further before whining to everyone. Jay S
